Starting a religion

Starting a Religion is not as obvious as you think. In true form, Iggy Chaos (hilariously) gets ready to setup his.

I'd replace the (hilariously) with (sophomorically).

So we can start making fpp submissions about the latest blog entry from our favorite blogosphere bigwig? Best of the Web, baby!

"Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way to do it would be start his own religion." -- L. Ron Hubbard, creator of Dianetics and founder of the Church of Scientology (quote is possibly apocryphal)

Hey, without an apocrypha, you're not a real religion!

that's so gay.

For fuck's sake if you're going to link to a blog entry then at least link to the permalink of that entry, not the blog's front page. Visitors that read this later (assuming it's not deleted for being fucking lame) will see whatever happens to be the current post at that time, not the one you happened to be referring to. You totally suck at the internets.

The last time I started a religion I was spat at by old Italian ladies. It wasn't funny. They really know how to spit. With accuracy.

Oh, wait, MEH.

Self-link? I mean, I have no evidence, but... it just smacks of it.

Can I request a new type of flag? Because I was really searching through the pull-down flag window for "Incredibly Lame". It wasn't there!

Eh, I thought it was amusing, if not deep. Beats YouTube.

Oh, and couple more things: Ten posts to say "meh" without being funny? Weak. From members who haven't even posted one link yet? Double weak.

Blog posts are fine, especially when long. A link to the front page of this dude's blog is a bit excessive, but give it a fucking rest, sissies.

(Hopefully, that's the end of the derail).

From members who haven't even posted one link yet?

Some of us refrain from posting links because we'd rather wait and post something worthwhile than post inane crap (such as this).
posted by nightchrome at 6:54 PM on June 21, 2006

You've been waiting almost two years. How about you put some effort into not commenting until you can avoid saying inane crap (such as that)?
posted by klangklangston at 7:25 PM on June 21, 2006

My inane crap is smellier than your inane crap. Bigger, too.
posted by Meatbomb at 7:33 PM on June 21, 2006

I haven't found anything that I consider to be "Best of the Web" which hasn't already been posted by someone else. If more of us showed a little extra restraint, maybe we wouldn't be suffering the glut of youtube-filter/news-filter/one-blog-entry-filter that we're suffering right now.
Comments are just comments, there's no justification for telling someone to stop posting them, except to just be a jerk. FPPs on the other hand are a whole other ballgame.
posted by nightchrome at 7:37 PM on June 21, 2006

Oh, bullshit. There's a pretty easy justification (the same to be made for speaking against bad FPPs): You're making the site worse by not shutting up. Being Sarcasmo the BotW bot is inane crap, and being the fifth one to post it means that you should probably have taken that extra minute to let the nerve impulses peter out rather than being the next in line to say "Me too! I also thought it was bad!" At that point, flag it and shut the fuck up. Jesus.

(Hopefully Mip is flagging all of these as derails so we'll be biopsied out).

Not funny, not good. Not an FPP worth reading.

If you're going to start equating comment content with fpp entry content, then by that standard 95% of mefi membership would have to stop posting comments.
A comment is just that, a comment, your publicly-stated opinion on the matter. A fpp is contribution of something you feel is worthy of note, something you feel should be shared with the readership as it stands on its own merits. You cannot possibly equate the two, and the fact that you are trying to is frankly very sad.

People who look at the number of posts a person has made and makes judgements about them are assholes. But then, people who criticize posts without ever having posted are assholes too! It's a paradox.
posted by Citizen Premier at 8:44 PM on June 21, 2006

I'm perfectly willing to admit I'm being an asshole about this.
I just think that when it comes to quality control on mefi, being an asshole is "erring on the side of caution".
posted by nightchrome at 8:53 PM on June 21, 2006

Not only is it not particularly funny, it's also blasphemy.

The one true fake religion is FSM.

I read the link.
Then I thought, "This was on MeFi?"
Seconds later I developed this course of thought.
Which came to a head in a realization.
And this unfortunate epiphany?
Metafilter is in decline...a recession...a coma.

If you don't mind some discussion about the topic the post linked to: Does anybody know how much effort it actually takes to form a religion? Do you have to have a certain number of followers? How much $$$ does it take? What are the benefits? I had expected the blog post to be about that.

Wow -- freedom of speech really is beyond Americans.

Well, I imagine it depends on what you plan to do. Is this a hobbyist religion? Small business/local community venture? Are you looking at it as a major growth project?

Unless you have a solid business plan, plenty of capital, and the time to get things going properly, it's probably best to aim for a simple cult.

I dunno, that looked a bit like dissent to me. Maybe you were thinking of "freedom to speak without ever being criticized"?
posted by cortex at 6:44 AM on June 22, 2006

cortex, let's say I just would want some of the juicy parts, i.e. devoted cultists, orgy opportunities, tax exempt status and maybe some special peyote-for-Native-American-religion-type of other law exemptions. What would the minimal effort be I would have to put into that?
posted by Herr Fahrstuhl at 8:10 AM on June 22, 2006

Devoted cultists: you need some bored, dissatisfied people and some hallucinogenics. A modicum of charm would be helpful.

Orgy opportunities: keep your physical requirements low, and see above.

Tax exempt: IANAL. Find a good tax attorney.

Peyote and such: Find a good tax attorney.

My guess is you could get the ball rolling for a few grand, but you're going to have revenue issues unless you can snowjob your devotees into financing things.
