"White straight middle-class middle-aged men are the Real Victims of discrimination. You can't get a job nowadays if you're a white straight middle-class middle-aged man. (Well, I did, but that's beside the point.)" How to argue on the internet, by Steven Baxter. [Via The Awl]

I don't see the point of you writing this post at all. What do you hope you're going to achieve?

Uber-pernickety pedant of the week award

FTF...oh, I see what you almost made me do there.

What the hell do bald guys know. Bald guy Steven Baxter is clearly bald so I would not put much stock in his ideas.

"What's the point of talking about things?" finger-waggery: "I don't see the point of you writing this post at all. What do you hope you're going to achieve? Do you think the world will change at all because of what you've said? I don't think so. (Of course you could equally make the same point about this comment, but that would be wrong, because me making this comment really will change everything)."

Oh god yes. If you don't like discussions about atheism/Palin/whatever just steer clear.

Oh, but it's okay to shoot somebody in the face.

Yup. MetaFilter is definitely doing it right, according to this.

White straight middle-class middle-aged men are the Real Victims of discrimination...

Without clicking the link, I can already tell Metafilter will have a field day with this.

You know who else liked to outline ways that people argue badly on the Internet?

Permeability with the category "white straight rich old men" is higher among members of the category "white straight middle-class middle-aged men" than almost any other permutation of race, orientation, economic class, age group, or gender subcategories.

I'm shocked, shocked to learn that people make pointless, predictable comments on the internet!

If you are in favour of this, then you must be in favour of the way Justin Bieber does the Dougie.

I think, uh, maybe you should click the link.

Thanks for the suggestion, but actually, I'm going to go get a late lunch and then do some other stuff that's not clicking the link. I can tell what kind of piece this is going to be from the excerpt.

I honestly can't believe you posted this with all the shit that's going on in Egypt. What's next? Cute videos of kittehs? The apathy on this site disgusts me.

You say that arguments about semantics are bad, but putting kidneys in your pie is all right, is it?

Man substitutes tired cliche for argument, film at 11.

Pernickety. I like that word. It's like persnickety, only nitpickier.

I am a white, straight, middle-aged man and I can't get a job. I think if I were middle-class I'd have a better chance. Some people would say I am middle-class because I'm not poor, own my own house (well, okay, flat) and I know what quinoa is. I say those people are middle-class gits who disrespect my working-class roots, and I invite them outside for fisticuffs, just as soon as I've finished my martini... I mean pint of bitter! Ooh, what a giveaway!

Umm.. What were we talking about, again?

The "I See You Didn't Mention" Spanner/Works Interface: "I see you didn't mention the crimes of Pol Pot, or Mao Tse-Tung, which were undoubtedly horrific. Funny how people like you never mention their atrocities in a discussion - but then again, I suppose you'd be in favour of that."

Wrench and Pol Pot analogies are insulting and demeaning to my right to exploit suffering. Coupled with the hopeful knowledge that people in general do not know the real Salot Sar, the one I “knew” (read) of, the one that scares Ben Kiernan. yes, the real brother 1# was invisible on Thursdays and could fly anywhere in a small plane kept aboard a sampan, his jeep muffled so the quiet would be more profound.

Forget that he synthesized fear that makes Heydrich look like a cadet with saber skills and love for the arts.
