You say alfalfa, I say genetically modified alfalfa

On January 27, the USDA made the decision to approve the unrestricted cultivation of genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa. This means GE alfalfa can be planted without any federal requirements to prevent contamination of organic and non-GE crops. What are the consequences?

A lot of fingers are being pointed at Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm for endorsing an unadopted coexistence option rather than an outright ban on GE alfalfa. They are members of the NON-GMO project which claims they did their best and that a GMO ban was unrealistic. Others blames the Obama Administration.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I like to think this crop is actually named after Willie Tanner having a freakout and just shouting "ALF! ALF! A--". Also, previously. -- cortex
