Quite amusing.

It's disgusting and totally not safe for mixed company, either.

Hey, I really need to go to a meetup and make some metafilter friends- my 'real-life' friends are starting to get disturbed by the videos I've been sending lately...can't wait for the reaction to this one! And Shen1138...it's like a curve, the drinks make things more fun after one, two, three, but sometimes there's the point where it levels off and stops getting more fun and you should stop...but you don't. Then, as the video indicates, things may go rapidly downhill from there.

One of the things about booze is that the drunker you are the worse your decision making gets. You can go from "I'm kinda drunk but just one more drink" to "Oh my head, what happened last night and where am I?"

Another non-drinker here, just to mention that it also seems like in addition to any intrinsic enjoyment from actually getting drunk some people seem to really revel in telling stories about how drunk they got on particular occasions. (Which makes sense to me if it's something that you're really into, it's kind of like a car guy telling stories about his car or a computer guy telling stories about his computer.)

Well, as a sometime drinker who used to be a much more serious drinker, just let me say alcohol doses are hard to meter. You get up to a good point, then you determine to stay there. It can be difficult to reach <em>just that spot</em> over and over again. More often that not, you end up overshooting the mark.

Or, if you are like me, and the now ex-wife is asking you to dance, you have another G&amp;T so the knees don't remind you of their arthritic presence.

People drink modestly because it reduces stress and anxiety and might even be good for you. Sure you could meditate or cuddle a puppy or something but alcohol is a drug, and it works reliably.

I also have a personal theory that some of us are self-medicating for diabetes. Alcohol reduces your blood sugar significantly, and at levels which are not addressed by the usual diabetes medications. Being pre-diabetic I have noticed that if I completely stop drinking it becomes much more difficult to control my blood sugar via diet alone, and once my fasting glucose hits 160 or so the gout and hemorrhoids show up and I start gaining weight.

People drink heavily because the more buzzed you get the more your judgement is impaired, and it makes you feel good and we instinctively want more of things that are making us feel good. Even when we know what will happen the next day the drug itself makes its siren song harder to resist the more of it you have had.

And people drink heavily even when they know better than to get started because, even when it ends badly it's still fun getting to the bad part.

(FWIW I drink what most people would consider pretty heavily, but I've only hurled because of it three or four times in the 20 years I've been drinking, and in all of those situations it was because I was unaware of the potency of what I was drinking. Also when I get very drunk I get sleepy instead of belligerent, which is probably a blessing.)

For me, it was the fact that he was sporting a semi when he was supposed be rat-arsed drunk.

Clearly it had been carefully fluffed for the camera's benefit.

Imagine all that could happen if Sushma applied her commenting prowess to world peace.

The short made me giggle but then again I have done some mildly embarrassing things while drunk (drinking PBR off the floor at a DC MeFi meet-up and then vomiting on the Metro ride home, for instance).

With regard to the drinking question, and for further fun in the personal anecdote domain, I drink pretty regularly but never get black-out drunk, mostly because I think it's really stupid and I'd probably have to throw up to get there (another thing I generally avoid like the plague). Naturally I know some people who do drink to reach levels of brown-out or full-on black-out quite regularly (and many of them brag about it, as mentioned upthread), and I know people who think that it's not normal to go out drinking without vomiting the night before or the morning after. I'm not sure what it's about, because I like to drink but terrible decision-making (which is bound to happen if you lose your cognitive abilities) and general physical pain aren't things I find enjoyable.

One reason people tend to get too drunk, which is kind of hard to see from sobriety's vantage point, is the thirst that alcohol induces intersecting with reduced inhibitions.

I was out one time and thinking to myself, "<em>I do not want to be any drunker than I am now. I do not want to have any more to drink,"</em> and actually catching myself raising the bottle to my lips at the exact same moment because I'm super thirsty and there's a drink in my hand. It's a feedback loop.

One of my other difficulties, which I expect also applies to many, is that I'm a much lighter drinker than most of my friends, but it's hard not to follow their pacing. This is especially true a) when you're sharing something like a pitcher or b) when someone goes to buy a round and checks to see if you need something or heads to the fridge. And as much as I understand that I should not pace myself on what they're doing, the same reduced judgment makes this progressively harder to remember.

Many times, also, I can want to stop but have company that strongly tries to persuade me not to do so. "Oh, come on, one more drink." Again, reduced inhibitions lowers my resistance.

Lastly, the threshold of poor judgment is always closer than you think. I've learned that when I go out with friends, two pitches shared is good. The problem is that a third pitcher wouldn't be too drunk - a third pitcher in and of itself would be fine. But the third pitcher always makes me say yes to the fourth. So you actually have to look not at how drunk you are when the third pitcher is offered, but anticipate how drunk you will be when it's done. Which took a few days of work of "God I wish we hadn't had that fourth one" to figure out.

generally someone who drinks to the point of black out is an alcoholic. it's a huge red flag of problem drinking and isn't something people just fall into accidentally by having that one extra drink too many. alcoholism isn't the frequency someone drinks, you can drink once every few months and still be one. it's that they can't have a few and call it a night, hence drinking to the level that they physically can't anymore.
