Colonel Qaddafi - A Life In Fashion

As funny as this is, the hilarity of Qaddafi's fashion choices does little to make up for all the suffering he has inflicted.

"...The Snoopy hat and leather bomber jacket raise the questions: Where does this extraordinary individual get the ideas for his wardrobe? Does he have a team of designers back in Tripoli, working up the hundreds of bizarre looks required of a world leader on official business? What gave him the idea that a fur trapper’s hat was right for this moment in the home of the Bourbon dynasty?"

This post was deleted for the following reason: Not sure this is really a great time to go fishing in the archives for front-page Qaddafi lulz. -- cortex

...so I thought I'd make a post about the former?

That first picture reminded me of the cover of Blondie's Parallel Lines.

Which also doesn't make up for all the suffering Qaddafi has inflicted. But it's a really good record.

And Vanity Fair: you're not fooling anyone, sticking this under the "politics" header.

This is from August, 2009. VF says:

Since completing his transition from international pariah to statesman [...]

Now, we're all hoping that that can end with "and back to pariah again."

i almost wish i had so little going on, so little concern for shit that matters, so few things in my life that are stressing me out and taking up my leisure time, that i could give a fuck about Qaddafi's fashion choices over the years.

If those historical photos are any indication, he's been working on that sad little mustache for forty years. No wonder he's pissed off.

Yes, a bit odd, but, in the grand scheme of things, he doesn't dress as odd as some.

Lots of people become buffoons when they have no one to say 'no' near them.

Lots of people become ruthless and evil when they have no one to say 'no'.

I think it can only be a net positive to point out how insane he is. Fashion choices make this obvious in a way that his tyranny does not. The actions of a tyrant come from complex and serious places, and must be weighed accordingly.

His fashion sense clearly comes from mars, and it is healthy to laugh.

Humor matters, it's one of the things that makes life worth living. Not to mention it is an important if not essential weapon against tyranny. It can also bring people together.

I am new to metafilter - my apologies if this post is considered out of line.

What gave him the idea that a fur trapper’s hat was right for this moment in the home of the Bourbon dynasty? (Versailles in December)

It was Versailles in December. Of course he's going to take the hike to those charming Rousseau-inspired out-buildings. Seems like exactly the right outfit. Although a long black cashmere coat would have worked just as well as the bomber jacket, I guess.

Good bit of journalism from the Guardian among the Berbers in western Libya.
