When I was a kid, growing up on a farm, if I saw dust devil moving across the field, I'd stop the tractor and run like crazy to try and catch it. A few times I was able to stand in the middle of one: it was very strange and eerie. posted by 445supermag at 1:19 PM on March 10, 2011 [8 favorites]
So yeah that was amazing and gorgeous and all but about two thirds of the way through when the one sheet of plastic kind of picks up the other sheet of plastic and uh
um

This reminds me of that Family Guy take on American Beauty when they're watching the plastic bag and god pops up and says "Do you have ANY IDEA HOW COMPLICATED YOUR CIRCULATORY SYSTEM IS?" posted by disillusioned at 1:38 PM on March 10, 2011 [2 favorites]

Wonderful to watch but that agribon is not cheap. I found myself wishing the guy would at least make the effort to try and save it. posted by The Violet Cypher at 2:18 PM on March 10, 2011 [1 favorite]
The Violet Cypher: The youtube comments actually mention this. The strawberry person says "I am happy to say it wasn´t lost only a bit torn" posted by aubilenon at 2:23 PM on March 10, 2011
I definitely would've run over there and grabbed onto one of those sheets - not to try to save it, but to ride it! posted by Greg_Ace at 2:50 PM on March 10, 2011
Absolutely, eerily beautiful.
And God bless the cameraman farmer for keeping his mouth shut for at least the first couple of minutes, letting nature do its thing and allowing me to have my own OMG and Holy !@#$ moments.

Really? You want him to grab onto a 20m-long, 60kg sheet of material traveling at 100km/hr with his bare hands? No thanks. posted by yiftach at 2:52 PM on March 10, 2011

I was in one like this once. It felt like my internal organs were being buoyed up. I couldn't tell if the sensation was from the phenomenon or my exhilaration. posted by perspicio at 2:53 PM on March 10, 2011 [1 favorite]
At first I was like "meh, I've seen more trash get blown around in empty lot dust devils in my area" but then the whole damn sheet lifted up and I was like "holy crap, it's gotta be a djinn!". posted by Burhanistan at 2:53 PM on March 10, 2011 [1 favorite]

For people who, like me, were wondering whether "Pupping" was the term for what tornadoes are doing just as they begin to form, I think it's very likely that it's referring to the Austrian town of Pupping. Hey, internet video dude, I can see your house from up here! posted by ZsigE at 3:54 PM on March 10, 2011
Opened this and muted it immediately because I had this playing in another tab. Recommended. posted by carsonb at 9:05 PM on March 10, 2011
i found this video utterly captivating. it made me think of gods and spirits* at play. nature appropriating the ugly utilitarian works of humanity and imparting eerie grace. stately and formal somehow, though so fluid. and i was not surprised that when the cameraperson got close the divinity turned monstrous and dangerous and overwhelmingly loud. gods and spirits* are that way, no? safer appreciated at a distance.....

Great. Now we're gonna have a garbage gyre in the air. There really isn't anything beautiful about trash tumbling through the air. posted by IvoShandor at 10:04 PM on March 10, 2011
To be fair, this isn't trash. It's plastic sheeting that's being used to preserve strawberry crops from damage by cold weather. The fact that the air currents have lifted it from its intended placement and made it dance beautifully and mesmerizingly in the air doesn't turn it into garbage. I'm sure the owner of those fields is a bit disturbed by what he found had been made of his carefully laid-out plastic.
Lament trash in the air if you want, but this ain't that. posted by hippybear at 10:10 PM on March 10, 2011
So purty and graceful.
Until that dust devil grabbed tore the guys head off and sent it screaming a hundred feet into the sky to join the gentle pirouetting of fabric high up..up..up in the air...bandaging the bleeding strawberry spirit imparting it's taste to the fruit.

That's one thing that went through my mind watching that: will they ever be able to untwist that stuff and use it again? Seems it might be more practical to buy new ones, but maybe not. posted by StickyCarpet at 10:11 AM on March 11, 2011
Someone wrote a short story about a sentient whirlwind. I don't remember who.
I'm oddly relieved I wasn't the only one feeling sympathy for the farmer. My 'oh shit' was all the work to put it back, just from a whirlwind. And a little voice in my imagination says "reason 109364 why desk jobs are better." posted by Goofyy at 11:19 AM on March 11, 2011
