I'm not sure I've seen a better site that really summed things up so well yet:
cityindustry.com

When someone does, do us a favor and mirror it on a geocities page.

Better yet, a page without banner ads.

Well, it looks like they're scrambling to get it back up now. Try also http://www.framerate.net, as they seem to be working to make a mirror site.

Hm, I got in, but the images are just moderate sized thumbnails. There an email for getting hi res versions of them, but none of the photos appear to be worth it.

I saw it, but from what I could tell, it looked as if the person was a safe distance away -- then went towards the WTC and inside the building.

The pictures were only small thumbnails (clicking on them did not produce a larger image), and I was rather put off by the images....

Should the average media-enthusiast (web, zine people, etc.) head towards a site of obvious distaster? Isn't s/he only getting in the way and jeopordizing lives (including his or her own) -- all for mediocre images?

I think the most amazing images and movies came from those that happened to be there with cameras; not those that rushed to the scene and tried to create drama.

jennak, the page I first saw actually looked to be more of a chronology of someone rushing out of the building, not toward it. I was moved by the frantic shots of people in the stairwell, down to the lobby, looking out the windows at rubble on the ground outside, stepping out and looking up to see the smoke and fire, then being in the hazy aftermath. It was more first-person than anything else I'd seen. Sorry it appears to be down now.

If so, my apologies. It's very hard to tell from the teeny pictures. The first few pictures were of the skyline, so I thought the person was blocks away at first.

It could also be that the person was a tourist and snapping pictures of the skyline on a pretty September day.

The only two images I had left in my cache: here. Not the best, one a picture of a hazy NYC street, the other an odd photo of someone crouching, looking up, oddly framed.

The full set is now up at http://www.framerate.net/ including hi-res photos. God. These could be some of the last photos of these fire fighters.

Yep - check out this one - the water running down the steps, how eerie.

Yeah, my officemate's cousin escaped from the South Tower just after the first plane hit, and while they were running down the fire exit, water and mud started cascading down the stairs, even washing some people down. You have fire above and water coming down; it's a virtual attack of the elements.
