Gonna buck the tide here by taking this a bit seriously. I read a moderate amount of fanfiction and one of the things I see in genderswaps is a chance to put women in protagonist action roles that they don't normally get in film/tv canons (there are more in books, but the fandoms I read are mostly tv and movie related). It's cool when you're a woman to see a genderswapped hero taking names and kicking ass in the same way the guys get to.

Axis Powers Hetalia Rule 63. I suppose because once you've decided you're cool with imagining interwar and WW2 great power politics as a series of gay relationships between personifications of various countries at a high school, flipping the genders around is a really really tiny mental step.
immlass: The signaling is interesting though. Character design attributes are often visual shorthand for the personality of the character, and it's interesting to see which traits are preserved, and which traits are inverted along with gender.
