OK anyone having the same problem? the bean video goes about 20 seconds and then keeps loading the next damn video.. and throws another commercial in while its at it.

Apparently I'm doing something wrong because trying to view the videos keep crashing my browser. I get through the advertisements and then there's nothing and I have to restart my browser.

Ok I got the video to work and I'm having the same problem as ReeMonster.
posted by MaryDellamorte at 7:48 PM on April 3, 2011

I can confirm the video does not work.

Firefox 3.6.16, adblock. Plays an ad, plays 18 seconds, then plays another ad.

You're doing web design all wrong.

(Skipping ahead to the stir-fry video: it's working).

I got to see the entire mashed potatoes video, but I'm having the same problems as above on Grilled Cheese. Still though, it was nice of Chow to break up their advertisements with a little bit of content.

Some of these are actually kind of useful and charming...but the nacho and sushi ones seem to have an uncomfortable combination of condescension and infomercial fail.

The tea video cuts out like the bean video does and those are the two I want to watch the most! The mashed potato one is interesting, I think I'm going to try her technique tomorrow but substituting soy milk instead.

If you have a chance to work with Hubert Keller, and you don't let him do every fucking episode, you're doing it all wrong.

I apologize for the video problems. They were working fine for me, but they don't seem to be now.
posted by ColdChef at 8:18 PM on April 3, 2011

I'll let our multimedia team know about the video problems people are having and see if they have any solutions.

Aw, it's not your fault, ColdChef.

I couldn't see the whole Keller episode on the burger, but he does seem charming. He will be my second Euro-French boyfriend after Jacques Pépin.

On preview: thanks, jacquilynne!

FWIW, I emailed the site about the problems we've been having. Dammit.

I wish the videos were working right, I like chow.com despite sometimes seeming SEOish. Plus I really need to learn how to harangue potatoes (wait, wrong thread...).

This was already in my bookmarks; did I not find the site on MeFi?

The grilled cheese and mashed potato videos, despite their simplicity, were very helpful to me.

This was already in my bookmarks ---It might be there because the bacon one was all over the blogs not that long ago.

Cold Chef, be honest, is that your cousin?

Wow, blanching zip-locked basil in the microwave for pesto, who'd a thunk?

I can't believe how much milk went into those mashed potatoes.

I thought that clicking on View Comments would help with the video problems, as it opens a new window with its own video player. Unfortunately that video player also fails with the message 'The video you have requested is unavailable or may have expired' after a few seconds :(

That pumpkin pie recipe looks yummy. I've never thought of using an actual pumpkin before. I'm kinda wondering why I never have.

The video you have requested is either unavailable or is being blocked by an ad blocker installed in your browser.

Sooo...apparently, Chow insists you sit-through the Doubleclick-supplied ad, or you get no video. Fail.

Anybody that starts off a coversation with: "you are doing it wrong," probably should spend a bit more time learning techniques of polite conversation.

Also, wow... while some of these things are cool, its like telling me there's only one way to peel a banana. There isn't - as much as a pretentious asshat would have you believe.
posted by Nanukthedog at 4:29 AM on April 4, 2011

Well it isn't an ad blocker causing the issue, as I don't run one.
posted by netd at 4:52 AM on April 4, 2011

I'm not sure what the hell is wrong with this page. I watch the ad, and then 20 seconds of the video and then it jumps to another one.

VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

I watched the commercial and about 8 seconds of video before it told me the video was no longer available.

The bean video stopped after about 20 secs but I was able to watch the stir-fry, sushi and roasted vegetables videos with no problem.

I'm chatting with our Producer about it, and she's refreshing the cache on the bean and tea videos which people have specifically mentioned as being problems and that should help. If there are any other videos that have started and then cut out on people, let me know, here, in MeMail or at info@chow.com and I'll make sure she gets the information. Also, if you're still having trouble with bean or tea, let me know that, too.

Sorry for the lack of working videos. We're always excited when MeFi links our stuff, and it sucks that you're not able to view the videos trouble free.

Still get this message even after disabling Adblock. Add my vote to the 'Fail' column.

No problems here at this time. Using Chrome with standard extensions.

Gotta say too, I love this stuff.

Borked for me last night, but working fine now. Thanks ColdChef.

They're working now in Firefox 3.6 -- even the beans video. Thanks, jacquilynne!

I love Chow. I like the "Obsessed" videos better, though. Novella Carpenter is my favorite one. Read her book, it's hilarious.

Excellent content... I was having problems with a few this morning and they are all good now... but the Burger one is dying after a few seconds.

I'm sorry, but those mashed potatoes looked like disgusting glop.

Glad I got to this post late as I didn't experience any viewing glitches. And I love this FPP because I just watched the beans video and I was most impressed. Plus I learned a ton. Now need to find a source for fresh beans.

Can't wait to check out more of these. Irritating preliminary ads are worth it.

THE BEANS VIDEO IS NOT VERY GOOD.

This method is superior.

That is all.

Works fine in chrome for me.

THE BEANS VIDEO IS NOT VERY GOOD.

I disagree. I thought it was very informative. Beans seem simple, but can be surprisingly hard to get right.

I will say that he recommends cooking in the same liquid that you soak the beans in, and the French chefs say that to avoid, um, tummy music, you should cook the beans in fresh water and discard the soaking liquid.
