Does anyone want to be "well-read?" by Roger Ebert.
This post was deleted for the following reason: Pretty much covered recently in this post. -- cortex
Maybe it's time for an Ebert version of Flash Friday. Like, um, Ebert Satebertday.

Ha! his Facebook box at the bottom of that page has him commenting on Scott Adams alias fiasco.

Just to read for yourself for pleasure is the point. Dickens will come later, Henry James perhaps never.
Yup, reading for pleasure is the point. He lists a lot of authors I'll probably never pick up, and he doesn't mention several I would put down as essential. But the point is to read and enjoy it, and if you do that regularly, then you're well-read.

This is very close to a double. Three days ago, we had this FPP on the same theme: a single link to an essay that prominently linked to and discussed the Ebert essay.

Also mentioned in this article from a previous FPP. I'm kind of surprised the Ebert article didn't make it into that MeFi thread.

I was to be good-read.
I was too good to be well read.

Agreed if you don't get enjoyment out of it don't bother, nobody is handing out prizes for choking down the most literature., I'm pretty well read for a computer guy and I probably shouldn't have forced myself to read a quarter of the stuff I've read. Why did I read "The Wild Ass's Skin"? I've never even had the opportunity to cleverly let anyone know that I've read Balzac until now. Probably should have learned to play guitar instead.

The comments section refutes his central thesis. Not sure why he has such a low opinion of his audience but they don't seem to mind much.
