Alien Loves Predator makes an (abridged) map of NYC movies. Can you name all 91? (via) posted by The Whelk (33 comments total) 6 users marked this as a favorite

I noticed in the text below the map, me explains that he watched but did not include "A Thousand Clowns" in the illustration.

Gosh n' gollies, you betcha that ain't right.

To paraphrase ALP's regular tagline: In New York, no one can hear you yell "CUT".

Now when is he going to resume the regular storyline and tell us what happens to Al Gore?

Wait--the A♥P guy can actually draw?

Genius! Thanks The Whelk!

also: man, I've seen a lot of movies...

Thanks for the (via). My personal favorite is 57.

I only wish 23 had used the more obscure Nighthawks.

I've guessed about 61 of them; I'm kind of determined to figure these out.

because I am a nerd looking for distraction I can name all of them except 78, near the bottom -- the chariot pulled by four men. AAAAARGH.

If I win this, I'll put it up for a MetaFilter raffle :)

Waitaminute. Moe Greene was killed in NYC? I thought he was in Vegas...

This is great! And something for my trivia-loving wee brain.

Okay, I feel somewhat ashamed for noticing COBRA and GI JOE weren't fighting atop the Statue of Liberty. I'm sure they'll correct this through Photoshop, though.

As recognized in the post title, the map ends at 110th Street, which leaves out any film shot in Harlem. And of course there are four more boroughs besides Manhattan.

And there's no reference to Gene Hackman driving under the L-Train in The French connection. I MEAN, WHAT THE FUCK!?!

The Whelk: "Anything above 110th St can't be said to actually exist"

Hey now! Aw, I was all ready to defend my school and say the first three look like they were filmed on the campus of Columbia University. Upon second glance however, I realized that the building with the dinosaur peeking out isn't Low Library but rather the American Museum of Natural History, which makes more sense both in terms of its location west of Central Park and as a plausible place to keep dinosaur bones.

Part of the reason I got confused was because I knew both #1 Ghostbusters and #3 The Nanny Diaries (I'm assuming?) were filmed on campus, but having seen neither of them (ack!) I did a bit of Googling to be sure and discovered that they were also filmed in other locations on the Upper West Side. Ah, the effects of too much time in the Columbia bubble: the entire city lies at my feet and yet I spend all of my waking hours in the library (and, apparently, not watching enough movies).

It's too bad the map wasn't extended north to W 116th since quite a few movies have been filmed here, especially in one particularly famous lecture hall. But alas, we are once again relegated to what is essentially "Upstate New York". (A cousin of mine living on the Lower East Side once told me that he avoids coming this far uptown because the train ride gives him a nosebleed. Ouch.)

Okay, wow. </Columbia fanboyism> And on preview, what beagle said, only more myopic and whiny.

What?! No Léon?

Griffin Dunne with Cheech, Chong, and Teri Garr in Soho?

How about Stanley Tucci on a rooftop with Hope Davis?

Parker Posey has gotta be on there somewhere.

And yet, if I'm not mistaken, I think I see You've Got Mail (Parker Posey again!), Billy Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Howard Stern's Private Parts. De gustibus and all that ...

PUT DOWN THE INTERNET AND GO WATCH GHOSTBUSTERS NOW. IMMEDIATELY.

SERIOUSLY. RIGHT NOW.

What? Why the hell is Bernie Chou running contests like this when he hasn't updated the strip in nearly 6 months?! Abe and Preston are still stuck in 1998, for crying out loud: this has passed "cliffhanger" and gone all the way to "I'm just going to torment my fans" territory.

WHY AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO'S OUTRAGED BY THIS?
posted by UrineSoakedRube at 12:56 PM on May 6, 2011

UrineSoakedRube, nope, you're not alone. I actually removed AlP from my regular comics list just yesterday because there had been no updates nor even hints of an update in months.

Awwwww, AlP is comatose again? It happens. I actually thought it was dead for a couple years there. Perhaps everyone who enjoys AlP should think about, I don't know, buying some of its related merchandise in an effort to show Bernie you care. I kinda need a new AlP shirt myself!

This is cute and all, but is there an actual map somewhere (or even just a list) of Manhattan film locations? Google is surprisingly truculent when asked: it keeps offering me lists of Sex and the City bars or scenes from Woody Allen's Manhattan.

Is American Psycho not on there, or am I just missing it?

Films made in New York, from movie-locations.com, of which I have zero knowledge, but it seems like a decent list... (it was the second google result for "manhattan film locations history") - it is missing 2 out of 3 of my picks, tho...

My picks from above:

Griffin Dunne with Cheech, Chong, and Teri Garr in Soho? - After Hours

Stanley Tucci on a rooftop with Hope Davis? - Daytrippers

Parker Posey has gotta be on there somewhere - Party Girl

Also, duh, searching "films made new york city" gets the first 2 results of:

List of films set in New York City (wikipedia)
