Pretty much a perfect reason to point to the Obama administration not releasing the photos of dead bin Laden. This is fine, but watching the internet having its various ways with the photos of a dead man is not something the world needs.

Judging from every image of the compound I've seen, this guy was the was the Bizzaro Howard Hughes.

The people who like to shoop photos of dead people are having a fine time with that picture of that other dead guy who kind of looks like Bin Laden.

I read this before I looked at the page - which I can't possibly imagine could offend, excite, or upset one individual, I personally found it even a little wistful.

I have to assume you're desperately grasping for reasons for Mr. Obama's decision, because I can't see this little video as evidence that anything, anywhere should be banned.

I think Brandon Blatcher is saying the fact that we're so enthralled with this turn of events that we've made memes out of everything is proof we shouldn't release the photos. We'd have people shooping Osama's headshot body all over the place.

Just like what happened with Saddam Hussein's hanging video (see YTMND) and that kid from the So Cash meme after he got his head impaled with some debris in a street-racing accident.

The internet really doesn't do very well with boundaries, and we can argue whether that's good or bad.

Anyway, I think the meme potential of the photos is peripheral to other issues, like will the photos incite significantly more violence, and is it right for the government to show pictures of our dead enemies, or is that like the old kingdoms that used to put heads of enemies of the state on pikes? Those are bigger questions, to me at least.

homunculus: ""She knows about the villa! Should I worry?""

Ok this wins. "Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk" a second if you watch it to the end. The other classic video memes not so much after the first one.

> We'd have people shooping Osama's headshot body all over the place. Just like what happened with Saddam Hussein's hanging video

Let me explain to you that such things are a necessary and tiny consequence of free speech.

Consider the Saddam Hussein hanging remix videos as a perfect example. I never even heard of them before - I checked 'em out, they're offensive, who cares? Searching, I find no evidence that these videos had any effect on the real world.

If you wanted to point to proof that free speech should not be limited, even for potentially offensive things, the Saddam videos are the perfect example.

I'm not saying that's a thing I support, I was just saying that's his argument. I said it was peripheral to the real issues with releasing the photos.

Free speech is bound to give people freedom to do things we dislike, like picket funerals or spread white supremacist propaganda online, but it's worth it in spite of that.

mccarty.tim: gotcha, we're on the same wavelength.

I don't think this site will go viral, though - when it comes down to it, it's too bleak...

How is releasing/not-releasing the photos of dead bin Laden a free speech issue?

One little Internet amusement, with an interesting take-home lesson of the day:

1. Be dismissed and ignored by the people around you.
2. Vow to matter! They'll all be sorry!
3. Stew to build up bogus rage and anger. Never have a sense of humor again.
4. Recruit the poor suckers into your cult/organization so that they do all of your dirty work.
5. The Master Plan!
6. Strike terror through violence! Hate! Hate! Hate! Kill! Kill! Kill!
7. Become feared by enemies and allies alike who build you up!
8. Become full of yourself as you send out a bunch of rambling and pretentious messages! You're still relevant! You still matter! It's all about you!
9. Some more violence! Eh, what do you do for an encore, anyway?
10. Look for more media references about yourself as you become a couch potato shacked up in some hole as the rest of the world live their lives and go about their normal daily business.
11. Burrow yourself somewhere to make yourself an easy target to find. Deny to yourself that you are retreating.
12. Get killed by your enemies.
13. The world gets to see that you were just a guy, who despite being born into wealth and had every opportunity to live a good life and could make a positive difference for others, just sat in some run-down hole watching television. Whoop di do.
14. Be endless fodder for precisely one news cycle, thereby giving the slacker press stuff to talk about with important airs without having to do real research.
15. Become laughable and mediocre Internet meme shortly thereafter...
