Jen: [Moss has a small plastic box with a flashing light] What is it?
Moss: This, Jen, is the Internet.Al-Quaeda
Jen: What?
Moss: That's right.
Jen: This is the Internet.Al-Quaeda?
The whole Internet.Al-Quaeda

Moss: Yep. I asked for a loan of it so that you could use it in your speech.
Jen: It's so small.
Moss: That's one of the surprising things about it.
Jen: Hang on, it doesn't have any wires or anything.
Moss: It's wireless.
Jen: Oh, yes, everything's wireless nowadays, isn't it... yeah. So, I can really use it in my speech? What if someone needs it?
Moss: Oh, no, no, people will still be able to go online and everything. It will still work.
Jen: Oh, good, good...
Moss: I tell you, you present this to the shareholders and you will get quite the response.
Jen: Can I touch it? It's so light!
Moss: Of course it is, Jen. Internet.Al-Quaeda
doesn't weigh anything.
Jen: No, of course it doesn't.
[laughs nervously]
Roy: Hey! What is Jen doing with the Internet.Al-Quaeda?
Jen: Moss said I could use it for my speech.
Roy: Are you insane? What if she drops it?
Jen: I won't drop it, I'll look after it.
Roy: No. No, no, no, no, Jen. No, this needs to go straight back to Big Ben.
Jen: Big Ben?
Moss: Yep. It goes on top of Big Ben. That's where you get the best reception.

The IT crowd is a latter-day "Are You Being Served" in my opinion, but this gag was fucking brilliant.

If Osama Bin Laden is anything like me, he was only watching The IT Crowd after Season 1 because he was hoping for Chris Morris to make a cameo.

One intel piece I had seen suggested that the story about porn in the compound was BS and was a CIA attempt to discredit OBLaden and Al Qaeda...Would they really lie to us about such things?
posted by Postroad at 5:36 PM on May 18, 2011

So when Seal Team 6 was banging on the door, OBL just shouted "I'm disabled!" in response?

The problem with Al-Quaeda is that they always try to walk it in!

The IT Crowd is basically the exact sort of show that is being made fun of on Extras.

Though it does have its moments.

Which is funny, because as much as i tried to like Extras, i just found it painfully unfunny and mean. But then that's what the Office was, and all his humor, so yeah.

Anyone who doesn't like the IT Crowd must be a sad, lonely and bitter person, but that's just my opinion. ;)

Actually I think the show being made fun of on Extras is an amalgamation of Dinner Ladies/every mainstream sitcom made before 2000.

Though I'm sure Ricky Gervais looks down on the IT Crowd as well, nob that he is. The IT Crowd delivered more laughs per minute than Extras ever did.

Well I liked Extras (best bit = Patrick Stewart) AND The IT Crowd (best bit = Matt Berry). So there.

Oh wow this is so typically Irish... evil evil evil people.

Never really got to follow the IT Crowd but I will forever be grateful to Linehan for the legend that was Father Ted (r.i.p. Dermot Morgan what a fantastic man he was).

Here's another little clever hoax about OBL someone pulled - in Ireland, of course - you got to read these two in sequence:

The IT show is now about as closely related to IT as the Discovery Channel is to science. I loved the first season. Ever since - disappointment as they expand their audience by going the Three's Company route. The Big Bang Theory on the hand remains a lone Geek Spartan blocking the mass popularity hoard's relentless pabular mastication of everything I enjoy.

I don't think the first series of the IT Crowd was different from any other in terms of focus and style. It's very broad comedy that's only nominally about IT.
posted by Summer at 3:26 AM on May 19, 2011

The IT Crowd seemed a bit banal and superficial to me, trotting out the usual obvious stereotypes (geek with no social skills, fluffy blonde management type who's clueless about computers, &c.)

Also, Chris Morris was disappointingly underutilised in his character, and Noel Fielding was miscast as the IT Goth (he played the character as his usual hipster fashionista persona, which seems to be the only one he can do).

Watched this playing out in real time on twitter... he played it very well and for the most part was amused by it, sitting mostly in the 'this can't be real camp, can it?'

The IT Crowd is basically the exact sort of show that is being made fun of on Extras.

You've clearly not watched enough terrible terrible ITV sitcoms from back in the day.

However the IT Crowd was very inconsistent but it highlights were very good (like all of the the Works Outing / theatre trip ep) and it got better as it went along (when it became more about the characters as characters). Over all though it was no Father Ted.

I was thinking more along the lines of the character Richmond, the goth sysadmin who Denholm Reynholm banishes to the server room ("Back in your cave, ya goblin!").

I think we can all agree that Series 4 of The IT Crowd was substantially lower quality than Series 1-3. This correlates with the departure of Ash Atalla from producing duties.

Back on topic: Why do you never see any Cockney al-Qaida? They're too cheerful.
posted by infinitewindow at 7:30 AM on May 19, 2011

If you haven't seen the 'Street Countdown' episode of the IT Crowd, please do so at the earliest opportunity. Yes, series 4, but it made me laugh. A lot.
