John Delaney, CEO and founder of the online prediction market Intrade, has died 50 meters from the summit of Mount Everest. Apparently, his third child was born just prior to his death and he never knew it.

The fact that his death was entirely preventable makes it all the more tragic. I feel great sadness for his wife and 3 small children.

I guess by the time you're having your third child, it just isn't as compelling an event as the opportunity to summit Everest.

There's a glaring disconnection between the quotes in the article about how he "lived for his family" and put them "first," with the manner of his death. I'm sorry for his family, but my snap judgment is that they should be angry with this selfish bastard.

Jesus, that's fuckin' horrible. What are the odds of that happening?
Sorry.

And?
Not to sound cold and callous, but is this FPP worthy? Yes, it's sad he never got to see his newborn. On the other hand, why the fuck was he on Everest when he knew the birth was near?

"The death rate on Mount Everest has not changed over the years, with about one death for every 10 successful ascents. For anyone who reaches the summit, they have about a 1 in 20 chance of not making it down again."

From here.

How do these people typically die? Heart failure? Lack of oxygen? Exhaustion? Anyone?

Mr Delaney - who also had two young sons, Caspar, three, and two-year-old Alexander - died without knowing his wife Orla, 39, gave birth to a girl last Wednesday. She is to be called Hope.

Orla's brother Liam Hurley said Mr Delaney lived for his family.
Um.

He founded a notable business at least.

The other guy was only famous for getting a compression hose stuck up his ass.

There's only a very short window of time every year when it's even remotely possible to attempt to summit Everest. That, combined with the fact that an attempt takes a lot intensive training to be in shape to do it, means that if you are going to make an attempt you can't easily reschedule. Obviously attempting to climb Everest in the first place is pretty restless, but it does approach the sort of once in a lifetime opportunity that you might miss a birth for.

Wow, ALL of my sympathy in this case for his three children. Why did his wife let him try that?

I agree with Buffaload. This doesn't sound like a family man. Apart from the fact that he had a family. Which now has to endure a tremendous amount of suffering. So he could go climb a mountain.

"He was a generous, loving guy - the family came first for him."
The latter statement may be in dispute. Who goes on an Everest climb when his wife is in the late stages of pregnancy?
