Firefrog. James Hanse casts Firefly, the Muppet movie (via) posted by bonehead (34 comments total) 6 users marked this as a favorite

I want to like this, I really really do. I really want to. As soon as I figure out why it's making me go "Huh?" rather than "Muppets. Firefly. Two things I love in the same package! EXCELLENT!" I'll probably ... feel a lot less confused.

While it makes sense to cast Kermit as Mal because they're both the lead, Sam the Eagle's disposition is much closer. Also, Nathan Fillion is a Muppet anyway, so he can stay in the role.

I'm not sure Fozzie has it in him to be Jayne. He's such a kind hearted bear. It's not like Sweetums is busy or anything.

I also call foul on Zoe. I love me some Red, but outside of a certain segment of the population, Fraggles aren't known for being sexy warriors who wear slink.

Yep, that's what I was going to say. Kermit is far too...Kermit. Kermit could play Leonard in The Muppet Bang Theory, he could play Odo or Bashir on Star Trek: Deep Space Muppet, he could even possibly play an amphibious regeneration in Muppet Who. But Kermit is not Malcolm Reynolds and never could be.

Or you can just get the Star Wars Muppets action figures (but not until September and you may have to go to a Disney Park to get them, but they're worth it, right?)

The idea of any Muppet other than Crazy Harry playing Jayne is simply ridiculous.

Frankly, no Muppet is really right for the role of Mal. I think Scooter may come the closest, though.

Carly Simon != Kaylee Frye

No Way. No How.

James Hanse is not the first person to think about combining these two fandoms. I give you... Seremuppety

And I freaking love Gonzo as Badger.

The biggest surprise for me was Wash not being Fozzy. The Fraggles are kind of an odd choice, but they are an established couple. It tickles me to think of Vera as a rubber chicken, though.

I loved Sam as Book, I must say.

FritoKAL: "I want to like this, I really really do."

You don't have to like crossover fanfiction just because you like the two properties it's based on. I almost said slash fiction and boy am I glad that's not the case.

Yes! Wembley Fraggle is Wash!

I noticed the Wembley/Wash resemblance like five years ago! And if he hadn't done that, his site would have been dead to me.

mkb: You don't have to like crossover fanfiction...

No, the problem is that I usually love crossover fanfiction. (She said, guiltily closing a Potterverse/Buffyverse fanfic)

The problem here is that the casting is all wrong. Kermit would make a great Simon, but he's not nearly stubborn or crass enough for Mal. Piggy is certainly not Inara, although she'd make a pretty decent Saffron.

I am on the fence about Sam The Eagle as Book.
Gonzo as Badger is hilarious though

How is it that Animal is not Jayne?

This guy's other work is precious beyond belief.

Hance also did some of the Calvin & Hobbes fanart I linked to last year. Here's a better collection of his range.

FritoKAL: No, the problem is that I usually love crossover fanfiction.

Considering the crossover of two dissimilar properties is a fine way to illuminate the likeable attributes of each. A sort of reverse of that Tlonista practice of attributing two texts to one author and then investigating that author.

Huh. Apparently there aren't enough high-profile female muppets to cover the main female characters in the cast of Firefly.

That's a really sad thing to realize.

And you don't need to enjoy a particular lousy example of fanfiction to be a real fanfiction fan either!

I was oddly Meh about this, too. Except that then I started having strong opinions about character fit. Sam the Eagle is too fierce and angry to be book, for instance, and I agree with the person up-thread who said Miss Piggy would make a better YoSaffBridge than Inara. I guess I'm not all the "meh" if I am continuing to think about this.

I do really like the art. I think the "work in progress" images are my favorites.

I like the concept but I think the choices are just clearly wrong. Not even one or two of them. Basically all of them.

It's been done.

The problem is that there aren't much in the way of evil or even moderately bad Muppets and most of the Firefly characters are either operating under a different moral system than the muppets (IE: Openly sexual in some way) or are out right petty criminals at best. I mean how can you cast any muppet as Niska?

Why are people still talking about a TV show that lasted half a season eight years ago? (I mean, I loved it then, but seriously? Just let it go...)

Why not just keep Nathan Fillion in the lead role? Muppets are always interacting with humans in TV and film so it's not that big a leap.

crossoverman writes "Why are people still talking about a TV show that lasted half a season eight years ago?"

Cause we should still be able to tune for new episodes every week today?

People liked this show. Some people still talk about Gunsmoke and I Love Lucy. I don't think Firefly is going to just fade away.

Yeah, I and my squeeze are watching through the episodes, most of the way done now. (We watch about one per week on average.) It's my first time watching it, and her second. It's a Good Show. I am already bummed that they didn't make more and that people say the movie wasn't a Great Ending.

That's a great idea! Then they could sing a song about his spaceship*!

*His spaceship is his penis.

If you've seen the episodes, Serenity is a Pretty Good ending. The problem is that about four episodes were compressed into the movie. It is quite unforgiving if you don't have the back-story.
