Though I would rather believe that I don't resemble a Staffordshire bull terrier, the dog it picked for me is very very very cute and I wish I lived in Auckland so I could meet him and give him a snuggle.

Abso. Lutely. Brilliant. Yup, that'll get petses adopted. bewilderbeast, that Staffordshire terrier is MINE.

It took about 10 tries to get an acceptable photo, but when it did I got a lovely Australian Blue Heeler. Seconding the wish I was in Auckland.

Tried about 20 times to get an acceptable photo, then gave up. No matter. I'm already matched with perfect adopted dogs.
posted by Jimbob at 7:31 PM on June 6, 2011

It would be nice if they would explain why a photo was rejected.

It matched me with a smiling yellow labrador! Great suspense.

Wow, one of the strings printed while the program is loading is "Loading Bonery language". I assume that's supposed to be a play on "binary" but someone didn't think too far ahead.

I can say with certitude my system was not hacked. My pictures were not manipulated. I am 100% Wiener.

I tried several times and got Elliot, a gorgeous mixed breed. If only I could go pick up my canine twin...

Cool, but took way too many tries to accept. It only took after I pulled a funny face.
posted by BungaDunga at 7:39 PM on June 6, 2011

It rejected me because I'm not white, I'm sure of it.
posted by Renoroc at 7:39 PM on June 6, 2011

Okay, went away in frustration and came back with more patience. To learn this is awesomesauce.

Applause.

My wife tried it, twice and both times it returned a dog so similar to the one she already has, and adores, that it is uncanny.

Me? First time a Siberian Husky and second time a Staffordshire (aka Pitt Bull).

I love it.
posted by bz at 7:44 PM on June 6, 2011

Huh. Two out of three times, I got a mastiff. I don't know what to make of that!

(aka Pitt Bull).

Barking up the Tree of Life, no doubt.

I get better results using webcam then an uploaded photo. Also, pleased to get German Shepherd.

Awww...I'm a siberian husky with beautiful blue eyes!
posted by darkstar at 7:59 PM on June 6, 2011

(Okay, so the "beautiful blue eyes" is a bit of poetic license, granted...)

The skeptical part of me thinks it's just a random match in order to get people to adopt dogs from the shelter; but I'm kind of okay with that :)

My match was a 10 week old bull mastiff mix puppy :-S My actual dog is a Yorkie. misssmatch lol

The software is stupid. It's just a simple average-colour matching algorithm. I plugged in my profile pic and it gave me a yellow lab.

Your spoiling my fun on purpose, Porpoise.

Apparently, the Burger King would do well with Bull Terrier, and Matt Smith would welcome a Siberian Huskey.
(just out of curiosity, it's not random - using the same picture twice shifted and scaled the same results in the same results).

I got a bull terrier. She has my frown lines.

(Wish they did cats!)

My son got the greyhound-mastiff, too. Probably a great dog.

I cannot get it to work for me with old photos no matter how hard I try. Oh well, I guess I'll try a webcam when I get out of work.

Grr, I do really wish they'd tell you why it doesn't work.
posted by lizarrd at 9:19 PM on June 6, 2011

Well I'm brown but it gave me a white heeler (a precious precious puppy I want precious puppy)

same pic 4 times. every time a completely different dog. i think my doggelganger is a shapeshifter!

This is a really nice idea. Nice to see an idea to help those poor old pound dogs.

unfortunately, i keep on getting different dog pairings. i started off with a staffordshire terrier and then moved to a bull mastiff and to a mix. *sigh* none of my matches were above 60%. i guess my doggelganger is not in the database.
posted by ichimunki at 11:24 PM on June 6, 2011

Tried it, but my cat kept jumping in front of the webcam. She has opinions on this.
posted by redbeard at 11:24 PM on June 6, 2011 [2 favorites]

I may be a bitch, but I certainly do not resemble the mastiff* mix I was paired with.
I'm tiny, fine-featured, and have long white hair.

Maybe a saluki?

An intriguing concept, however. I'd like to see it with more sophisticated software and a larger sample pool of animals.

*Face it, these are pit bulls. If there's any "mastiff" in them, they're seven generations back.
posted by ahansen at 11:42 PM on June 6, 2011

OK, I got paired with the cutest greyhound-"mastiff" mix and maybe sobered up a little. So I'm not mad at you anymore, Robot Lady, and I'm sorry I swore at you.

I got a 7 month old staffordshire... wait, I think I have something in my eye... brb

...it said I was a bitch! With a lovely caramel coat, but still. And after telling me my image was unacceptable for ten minutes. Geeze.

Excellent stuff. I got matched with Grace, a 12 year old Fox Terrier Mix.

It's all to promote the Pedigree Adoption Drive - as in Pedigree the pet food people.

You mean Pedigree the "IT'S PEOPLE!" pet food.

I got a couple of "image rejected" messages then tried again with better lighting on my face and all was well... then got paired with a Siberian Husky that would be great if I didn't live in an apartment on the other side of the Tasman Sea from it...

(not so keen on the fact that it leaves your webcam turned on even when it's not capturing though)

russm: "(not so keen on the fact that it leaves your webcam turned on even when it's not capturing though)"

I'm no computer doctor, but I imagine that's probably so the user doesn't have to reclick confirm on the flash permission to use webcam cap'n dialogue box.
posted by oxford blue at 4:03 AM on June 7, 2011

that would make sense... I wasn't thinking it was anything malicious, more assuming the original dev just didn't bother to close the webcam and nobody ever raised it as an issue...

Molly, Airdale Cross. Nice looking dog, too bad it's halfway round the world.

I got Toodles, an 11 months old Heeler. I very much wanted to reach through the screen and give it a snuggle. How to snuggle dogs through a computer screen is clearly a problem that DARPA needs to get working on.

I wish it would just let me drag the damn photo - not enough fine grain control when adjusting to make your face fit into its little grid thing. Couldn't get it to work. Hrmph.
