This is utterly ridiculous. Incomprehensible. I can't imagine why anyone would do something like this. Why would anyone make a videogame about high school baseball? posted by charlie don't surf at 7:47 PM on June 20, 2011 [4 favorites]
So does the game let you, like, manipulate the player's limbs and save it as a macro or something? That's actually kind of badass. posted by danb at 8:01 PM on June 20, 2011
laughed until i cried when he got to the pitching animations.. thanks posted by jjoye at 8:01 PM on June 20, 2011

"No one can hit that, that's a 2000 mile an hour fastball. Nobody can hit that shit."
Amazing.

Japanese high school baseball is serious, serious business. "Koshien," the national championships (named after the stadium at which they're played) is the nationally televised and watched by millions. Very big deal. posted by pts at 8:08 PM on June 20, 2011
Yes pts, that was a joke. Having lived in Japan, I am well aware of Koshien. But still, you're watching high school kids. Koshien is roughly equivalent to the US Little League World Series. posted by charlie don't surf at 8:12 PM on June 20, 2011

which, strangely enough, has a video game series of its own posted by jjoye at 8:22 PM on June 20, 2011

The incredibly depressing crowd agrees with you. There are like 20 people in that stadium, and it looks like several people are sitting alone. So by my estimation, there are 7 relatives of players, 3 public masturbators and 10 people who just like doing drugs in the fresh air, and needed some place that was guaranteed to be abandoned. posted by Uppity Pigeon #2 at 8:56 PM on June 20, 2011 [7 favorites]
QWOP was one of those flash games where I didn't like it, I didn't think it was good, I wasn't enjoying it, but for some reason I had to keep playing it. It is not a particularly intelligent part of my brain that made me keep playing.
It always feels like if you do it right, that jerk will actually run. So you keep trying. At first you think QWOP has some kind of physical problem. After a half hour, after the hundredth time he has collapsed on the track like a closeted jellyfish for no reason, you stop blaming yourself and start blaming him.
I think I have a Lore Sjoberg site (L to blame for the time I wasted on that goddamned game. And I guess while I'm at it, I'll blame East Manitoba Regional Kabaddi Champion '94 for reminding me of it. In which case: more like East Manitoba Regional Junior Kabbadi Champion '95. Jerk. posted by Uppity Pigeon #2 at 10:30 PM on June 20, 2011

You mean like high school football in Texas? Who would be interested in that? And make a whole tv series out of it? That runs for half a decade? HA! That won't ever happen. posted by hal_c_on at 1:32 AM on June 21, 2011
This seems like it might be funny if you're stoned. Must be getting old. posted by eeeeeez at 1:36 AM on June 21, 2011

Sort of, except that the Japanese SHS national baseball tournament is broadcast every year on one of the big national TV network and a big chunk of the general population actually watches it. It's one of the main TV events of summer vacation (I've tried to get into it, but there are a lot of bad match-ups that result in blow-outs; a few good games and talented kids though).
Checking the video, it's funny at first but wears off pretty quick. Maybe I'll give it another go later with the sound on... posted by p3t3 at 2:15 AM on June 21, 2011

Only if your second baseman....
That made me laugh coffee out of my nose. Which is fine, because I didn't need to be drinking the rest of this coffee. posted by bilabial at 7:18 AM on June 21, 2011
I tried QWOP for a few minutes, and it felt like it was fighting my bodies tendency to treat my hands symmetrically. I think if instead of QWOP I could play QWPO (or WQOP) it would be a whole lot easier. posted by benito.strauss at 9:14 AM on June 21, 2011

The QWOP video is a real winner. Stupid game. Hilariously stupid game. I laughed so hard I cried, no exaggeration.
Guy's voice is almost an exact copy of mine. That's exactly how I'd sound if I got into the silly video game commentary business. Maybe I should quit my day job. posted by syzygy at 3:09 AM on June 22, 2011

Friday Night Lights really has very little to do with the football, to be fair. Easily my most favouritest show in recent years. posted by antifuse at 6:03 AM on June 22, 2011
