What's on your mind? The hostage-taking standoff I'm in.

"During an overnight standoff with police at his hotel, Jason Valdez did what anyone does when they've got time to kill: He updated his Facebook." Valdez, who eventually ended up shooting himself in the chest and is now in critical condition, posted periodic status updates on his situation (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), and uploaded photos of a hostage. His Facebook wall is still up, open to postings, and filled with comments from both friends and detractors.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I think the intersection of new media and strange real-life circumstances is kind of fascinating so I get wanting to post about this, but between the super gawkerish nature of the situation and the facebook-heavy nature of the linked content this feels like not a great idea for a post. -- cortex

One more way to desensitize ourselves to violence.

Maybe it's just me, but stuff like this feels like ugly rubbernecking.

I think we need a moratorium on Gawker posts.

If Natural Born Killers were written today, Mickey and Mallory would have a twitter account and millions of people would follow them.

The internet is the ultimate soapbox and a lot of people who end up situations like this are looking for attention.

With the ease of documenting everything nowadays, I would expect that we'll probably see more examples of this sort of thing in the future. It's going to be grim.

On the bright side, he finally got the mastery sign for blackberries in Farmville.

Given that

A) You have to be logged in to Facebook to access anything about the post, and

B) the post is about somebody using Facebook during a hostage standoff,

I don't think this is appropriate for MetaFilter.

Dear AxMe: What do I do with this hostage?

The first link is an AP report. I do think it's unfortunate that most of the content can't be accessed though.

FTFY.

No more grim than the usual media-feed-from-only-the-police's-side that we traditionally get. At least this gives you an alternate view. But, yeah, it's certainly grim. Life is like that sometimes.
