Heather Armstrong, aka Dooce, went to Bangladesh.
Christy Turlington Burns invited the pre-eminent mommyblogger on a 5 day trip. And a twitter storm erupted. Charges of Poverty Tourism were made. Her husband chimed in.

Not 30 seconds into reading her husband's blog entry the word "troll" fell victim to semantic satiation.

Yeah, I'm also trying to figure out what the real issue is here. Someone care to explain?

I read her blog. The only thing that bugged me was her saying she hasn't seen poverty like this before. And while not a mass culture like it can be in a 3rd world country, she's never seen a homless person before wearing clothes so tattered, unwashed, etc.? She needs to go to more big cities and see our own atrocities and heartache. Poverty in any country, esp. a 1st world country, is inexcusable. I think she would have made more of an impact by taking care of that issue rather than Bangladesh.

The only thing you left out of your post is why I should care.

Yeah, I'm trying desperately here, but I just can't seem to muster a "meh" on this one.

stormpooper, I think you need to give her more credit. She has lived in Los Angeles and she currently (I understand) lives in Salt Lake. Both are cities with significant and conspicuous homeless populations that she has certainly seen. Maybe she's, you know, describing something as she is seeing it and saying that the poverty she saw in Bangladesh appears to exceed what she has seen in the major cities of the United States. I have not been to Bangladesh, but I live in Los Angeles and I would be absolutely shocked if the poverty in Bangladesh did not exceed the poverty of Los Angeles.
