YouMakeMeSoHappy is the blog of net-artist Nicolas Sassoon. His work features a minimalist, abstract and low-fidelity aesthetic, combining simple shapes and patterns in animations to produce stunning results. Warning: some flashing lights contained in these links.

A brief interview with Nicholas O'Brien over at badatsports.com. Via the saltw.net forums.

That hurts my brain.

Any relation to Vidal Sassoon?

I'm clicking but nothing happens. The splash screen reminds me of indie games like VVVVVVV.

Ah nice. This aesthetic was a bit before my time, but looking at maps of ancient games in Retro Gaming magazine makes me happy. Reminds me of that.

He needs to spend less time on theory and more time visiting the CG Society. There's LoFi minimalism and there's Can't Be Bothered to Learn the Software. The notion of making CG fine art with United States Geological Survey data sounds as source material seems really promising, but he didn't actually do much of anything with it. I don't expect a Blizzard game trailer, or even representational art per se, but for crying out loud, at least take a color theory class. This would have been laughed out of EVL in 1998.

Minecraft is a tremendously compelling lo-res 3D experience, and a heck of a lot closer to Bauhaus than this.
