1 in 4 Americans are wasted. Americans, like their booze, and drugs. Its no surprise why we are the number one drug consumer in the world.

Huh. BLS says only 9.2% of Americans are wasted.

Although if I was going to waste I might also go ahead and get wasted.

Also, this is dodgy reporting. Headline says a quarter of Americans are binge drinkers; body of article says a quarter have admitted to having binge drank at some point. Not exactly the same thing.

There's a fun logical progression to be had from "has participated in binge drinking" to "is wasted", but it's even better to ignore it.

True, that is the issue with many surveys/studies. Many people under report depending on how the survey is issued. The numbers I would be curious to see is the use of psychiatric medications for the general US population.

Also, remove the comma after "Americans", bump it up a skosh to turn it into an apostrophe, and insert it into "Its".

Dodgy reporting aside I think the larger question is "who cares?".

How much is one drink?

In the United States "A standard drink is equal to 13.7 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in

12-ounces of beer.
8-ounces of malt liquor.
5-ounces of wine.
1.5-ounces or a “shot” of 80-proof distilled spirits or liquor (e.g., gin, rum, vodka, or whiskey)."

I'm not going to keep with the pile-on about the article, instead, I'm going to complain about the USA Today Website, which showed me an ad that said "Penny Stocks are the Secret to Happiness"(naturally illustrated with a picture of a man and his bikini clad companion, a penny stock I'm guessing), then crashed my work computer.

I intend to do the work of 2 out of 4 Americans on this subject later tonight. Do try to keep up.

If your tools are not up to producing something you feel comfortable defending or at least being graceful about your mistakes you should probably not use them.

(I make way too many spelling mistakes and can't blame it on any fancy new gadget, just plain ole mediocre spelling skills)

lampshade: And it looks like this story is 3 years old.

What part of USA TODAY don't you understand? That's the brilliance of naming the paper as such - reading an article from the New York Times could be old news, but from USA TODAY? No matter how old the article is, it's always from TODAY.

And alcohol impacts different people in different ways. I'm not a small guy, but I can be tipsy after one decent beer.

Oh, and it's not 5 o'clock somewhere, because time zones are (more or less) in hour increments, not a sliding scale from east to west. But you could say it's happy hour somewhere.

That would explain a lot, actually.

The lede buried in the article - and horribly inconvenient to those weird hold-out crusaders against "underaged" drinking - is that not only do teens apparently drink/binge more responsibly (although that is probably a specious reading of specious statistics) but also that Vermont, the state fingered by the study as suffering the worst from childhood ruining scourge of underaged drinking, is oddly the safest/best place to raise 'the underaged'.

Five drinks at an all-day cookout/pool party? -OK
Five drinks at breakfast? -I'm not here to judge.
