On British phrasery, "took the piss something rotten" I think in the US we'd say: "gave him a hard time" (pretty close to that?)

If she didn't care about her son as someone said ("not listening when he told her of his life"), then she wouldn't have bothered! I think it is obvious that she loves her son, but her priorities are mixed up. Would any sane person travel 1300 kilometres to deliver a GameBoy? Obviously not. Just shows she has nothing to do, but loves her son to death.
