"YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT" is a series of portraits made by examining the interiors of refrigerators in homes across the United States by photographer Mark Menjivar, who also provides a food journal of everything he ate for a year. (more info)

And then, there's something to be said for having a rattlesnake in your freezer...

Many of these fridges are fucking gross.

Jeez, clean them out once in a while, people.

Pajamas in the fridge! What a neat idea.

What a fascinating study of refrigerators, a testament to the discipline this guy had to apply to assemble such a gallery.

HA! 40 pounds of meat, booze, and a rotting lemon.

I know people whose refrigerators are FULL of years old condiment containers. Dressings, sauces, etc. It makes me crazy.

I love the little personal statements.

Hears music in her head every morning when she wakes up.

Hey me too!

I kind of miss the point of my life when my refrigerator only ever held beer. Now I have, like, farmers market green beans and all this healthy yuppie shit.

I should take a picture of the fridge my roommate and I share (except that my camera is broken). We split it right down the middle. One side always has at least two gallons of milk, a thing of eggs, a broccoli, a container of applesauce, some variety of berries, Fage, butter, some kind of cheese, v8, some chicken sausages, probably-expired mayo, a thing of fancy mustard, assorted frozen berries, and 3 kinds of ice cream. The other side always has coffee creamer, a half-full coffee pot, takeout containers, a half-drunk bottle of wine, hummus, vegan cream cheese, bagels, apple juice, a dozen little bottles of different flavored stir fry sauce, Trader Joe's frozen enchiladas, and a bottle of tequila.

It doesn't really matter whose side is whose, just that it is PERFECTLY divided down the middle, to the point where our stuff doesn't even touch, no matter how full the fridge is. Weird.

Love the flag in the fridge.

I like this.

When I lived with my best friend, our freezer had a frozen bag of water (not to be confused with a bag of ice: think a plastic grocery bag filled with water and then put in the freezer), a miniature ice skating rink, an icepenis made from a condom filled with water and frozen, and an icehand made from a glove filled with water and frozen. This was because we were whimsical. But the fact that we had the champagne, mustard, and CDs-we-didn't-much-care-for fridge was because we ordered take-out too much.

I feel sorry for the woman who was disowned for marrying a black guy!

I spent a lot of time looking at these images, and they just get more and more interesting. The couple from San Antonio who split after 33 years of marriage -- their fridges are almost identical! The blind person's fridge was also fascinating. Excellent post. Thanks.

Fascinating. What's with the rattlesnake? Does anyone know what's in the black box by the eggs in #18, the New York production designer? Maybe chocolates.

I also spent a lot of time, trying to figure out what kind of person owned the fridges before looking at the description. Got the nurse (containers for everything) and one with type 2 diabetes (lots of low sugar items) spot on. This would make an interesting guessing game as you can tell a lot from a person's fridge (as well as trash...but I'm not supposed to talk about that after the restraining order).

His Above the Trees display is also wonderful. I have been to El Alto. It's eerie and beautiful. Like a different world.

Oh also, this was my fridge from about 2 years ago...some would say a lowpoint. I was proud of it. Since then, there's much more fresh produce and actual food in there....it was still fun reliving the college lifestyle (if only for a few months).
