16 year old sings about killing her husband [dlyt]

I've never been a fan of country music, but two weeks ago, I came across this song by 16 year old Jolene McNulty. She looks younger than 16, but she may be a bit more worldly than she appears. I was totally captivated by her voice and her theatrical style and (for a kid) the cleverness of her song-writing. When I saw the video two weeks ago, it had 60 views. Last week it was about 5,000. As of today it's at 13,000. It's going to be interesting to see where she goes with this.

Retrograde, nostalgia laden, theatrical, doesn't know phrasing at all, and she can't hold a note.

okay song writer, but nothing special.

The accent's a bit put on. She'll fit right in here in Nashville.

thank god you came along PinkMoose. We were about to click the link. You saved us from a retrograde, nostalgia laden, theatrical, non phrasing knowing no note holding youtube post.

[Full disclosure] I don't know anything about music, but I know what I like.

(I 'know' this girl via YouTube, that's how.)

Boy I hope the new Beavis & Butthead show rips the asshole out of Youtube country music videos.

Cute girl, nice voice, good camera presence, a bit too much accent for not being from Eastern Tennessee. But c'mon, stupid, mind-numbing, cliché-ridden-even-by-the-standards-of-coutry-music, songs. Nothing natural about her. Little white girl trying to be bad like some Ice T, but she holds that handgun like it's a smelly sock. It still had a yellow barrel cap on it (and probably a safety lock, but I couldn't see the first time and couldn't be bothered to look twice.)

But you *are* a fan of Johnny Cash, right? And a little Carl Perkins too if I have my full drink on.

Cute kid, pretty good voice, but is there anything scarier than a 16-year-old with a bob sitting in her bedroom holding a gun?

I paused william elliot whitmore to listen to the cd, i have written about country music for a decade, and really really like old crow medicine show, avett brothers, carolina chocolate drops, justin townes earle, laura marling, and the like.

i also listen to archival field recordings of country music from the 20s and 30s; and reissues of arcountry musicians all over the place, from the 50s to the 70s.

children doing adult things is a manipulative way of suggesting we shut down our critical resources and allow her to go scott free.

genuinely engaging with, and analysing history, or recreating history for critical or social reasons, is perfectly legitimate, and is not nostalgic. nostalgia occurs when simulacra is assumed to be the real...this can be done well, or done poorly, and country often does it really poorly--Chesney did it poorly, and this kid does it poorly.

Is American country particularly popular overseas? I notice the majority of the comments are in either Japanese or Chinese.
