I can just hear it... (slightly nsfw). Very interesting and evocative Flickr galleries of vintage photographs of musicians, curated by MeFite, flapjax at midnite. If you enjoy these, please see parts two, three and four.

He seems to have a conductor's baton in the other hand. I'd guess he is the conductor/bandleader, maybe, and I'd guess that the sword is a humorous prop, for the photograph.
Alternately, one might imagine that he used the sword to silence any hecklers in the audience. Something like this:
"You suck! Keep your day jo - "
