This obit post is lazier than a Police Academy sequel.

At least it's not a single-link obit post.

Would it be wrong to call this a double? Of itself?

Sorry if my post seemed lazy - I'm fairly new to metafilter (this is only my second post) and just wanted to let people know that he had died and hopefully get a discussion going with some good links and memories of him.
Hope that clarifies things. Let me know if I'm doing something wrong.

Man, I was just thinking about his guest spot on Married With Children as Al's old football nemesis, Spare Tire (so named not, in fact, due to his girth, but because he wore a spare tire on a chain around his neck). And the marketing for that episode, for which I was *totally* the target market. Bubba Smith and Ed O'Neil? Mom, I don't care if I have to miss a funeral, I'm watchin this.
As something of a gentle giant myself (nowhere near as tall as him, tho), I loved his character in the Police Academy movies. It's always sad to lose one of your heroes.
(I hear he also played some sport or something... Wonder if he ever figured growing up that he'd be primarily remembered by some for his acting).

He didn't just "play for Michigan State", he played in The Game of the Century or one of 'em anyway, 1966 Michigan State vs Notre Dame, a 10-10 tie.

Also, I remember him mostly for his work with Dick Butkus, especially on Blue Thunder, a TV show with disturbing political overtones but a kickass helicopter.

FYI, providing 'good links' is the posters job. Depending on the commenters to do it for you islame not best practice at Metafilter.

He was a monster on the field; I'm proud he was a Spartan. He had his number retired a few years back, only the 3rd MSU football player to receive such an honor.

here in baltimore, there's still a little bit of disdain towards bubba smith because of a book he wrote where he accused the baltimore colts of throwing the 1969 superbowl against the jets.
