Saying one thing and then instantly disproving yourself

You know the people who will say "I'm not racist"? That phrase is often followed with a 'but...' and a racist statement. Not Racist But tackles the problem on Facebook with ridicule, and @alittleracist tackles the same issue on Twitter. It'll make you facepalm with sadness and cringe with incredulity. (previously)

I'm not racist, but I went to Bali this summer, and almost all the locals were incredibly genuine, kind, and intelligent people.

Does this generalization make me racist?

I'm not racist, but isn't this a double with the June post you linked to right there?

Does this generalizationthe fact that I reported this as news make me racist?

If I want to wallow in this particular mudpit, I peruse my local newspaper's website. The comments therein are worthy of stormfront.org, but with less attention to grammar and spelling.

IMMIGRUNTS R TAKIN R JERBS!!!!

Sometimes it's frightening to realize just how many hatefully stupid people live around me, then I realize that the comments section of the local newspaper's website isn't representative of the place as a whole, since the non-hateful and less-stupid generally have more important things to do than spend their hours dripping venom on a local message board.

I can't read these. They make me too angry. I don't wanna start a dialog with these worms, I just wanna start punching them.

DU: lemme rephrase:

suppose, after my experience in Bali, I told friends that the Balinese are a kind, gentle, intelligent people.

That would be a generalization, wouldn't it?

Now I'm not excusing some of the comments made in the FPP link, but it's interesting to examine why we consider some statements to be racist, while others not. Is it the generalization that we don't like? Or is it the polarity of the generalization?

This is not only a double post, it's a stupid post. Racist things are racist, yes. That's not a reason to republish them all over the internet.

Seriously, sometimes I wonder what's wrong with us as human beings that we find things like this fascinating. Sure, we're not racist, but we seem to love gawking at racists.

1. Otherize "racism" as something that only bad people possess
2. Still have racist thoughts, despite not seeing oneself as a bad person
3. Make racist statements, all the while disclaiming "racism," implying that only other people are racist
4. ???
5. Profit Maintain and enforce status quo

I find it painful that none of these racist statements are .... articulate. Are they selecting out the good grammar and proper spelling for this blog?

Mockery makes it hard to open a dialog about this issue.

I'm sure there are plenty of assholes in Bali.

spacediver, this seems like a pretty dubious thread in which to play the "it's all actually about me" game.

Also, I get the feeling you don't know this, SharQ: double posts are usually deleted here on metafilter. I mention this because this seems to be a textbook example, and because you seem to have linked to the original in your post itself, so I'm guessing you aren't aware of this loose guideline.

Finally, the truth.

As as for whether saying, "X people are really nice", it may not be detrimentally racist, but it sure is inaccurate. What you may have meant to say was, "I did not personally feel that my person or pride was in danger while among the X people". Although, you need to scratch under the surface. See "Southern hospitality".

The Blue People are the best. Sometimes the Green People have something to say. I don't understand MetaTalk, because it involves the Brown or Grey People (depending on your monitor).
