Now, granted, I'm old and "out of lunch" as they say, but I thought Neutral Milk Hotel was the band April the receptionist girl on Parks & Recreation is fond of. A made up for TV band and not a real band.

Now I'm deeply confused.

Based on the trailer alone, great idea, but really shitty execution. The text scrolls too fast to read, they used terrible fonts, mixed tilesets and character faces. The maps look underpopulated. Lazy work.

Disclosure: I spent two weeks making myself a book trailer using the same software so I might be a bit of a snob about these things.

Don't get me fucking started -- it was a massacre. I had presale codes for both the Town Hall (I live in NYC) and NJ shows (thanks BrooklynVegan!). The Town Hall one was impossible. The TicketMaster servers got pounded to shit. The NJ one was a stroke of luck for me, although their ticket seller's thing just ate shit and died about five minutes into it, and my friend doing it at the same time couldn't get it.

I think what Jeff can teach us if that if we take a little time to be alone and learn a few chords, we could also try to make some simple songs that might touch someone else.

What we shouldn't do is think of him as some musical Sasquatch, hoping he lands somewhere, sometime and maybe even start singing a new song. That cult-like status is what keeps someone so sensitive from sharing himself. Anyways,

Great potential. No follow-through. Five seconds in, I was copying the URL to paste it on all the sites. Fifteen seconds in, I was copying random YouTube comments just to wash the taste from my clipboard's mouth.

Has anyone tried to play the actual game yet?

Also:

This is the first thread that saw me flag a reply simply because I didn't agree with the poster. I'll probably never do it again, but I regret nothing.

Also also:

I saw Jeff a few nights ago on the opening date of his tour. Ask me anything.

Uggh, I saw "Jeff Mangum" play in Athens Ga this Spring. That is, we heard a rumor at 12.30 for a 1am show where he was making an appearance. We booked it to the tiny venue and made it in a few minutes before they stopped admitting more people. Standing next to me was one of the NMT band members who showed up for the performance, so we had relatively good reason to suppose Magum would actually show. By shades, a band called "Soap Scum" came out and started playing music. Well, "music." They were on the stage for an hour, which involved about 20 minutes of painful guitar, violin, and toy piano feedback, another 10 minutes or so of the band members lying on the ground motionless, and 20 minutes of the band members making and then eating toast while watching a short video clip play on repeat. All of the band members were totally obscured by masks, with the one wearing a JFK presumably being Mangum. I don't think there has ever been so angry a group of hipsters as in that room. We kept waiting for them to cut the shit and just play ONE SONG, but they never did. Well, there was one 30-45 second bit of some nonsensical chanting toward the beginning of the set. After an hour, JFK made a break down the street while the band played some more feedback, then once he was safely away they walked off as well.

As we left the venue, fuming, this guy who was with one of my friends loftily told us 'he could appreciate the music,' even though it was admittedly 'heavily experimental.' I've never been so close to hitting someone.

The performance was during an experimental music festival (AUX), not a NMH reunion tour. It would have been cool if they'd played a pop song, but maybe it shouldn't have been so surprising and frustrating that they just played some garbage-sounds and rolled around on the stage eating toast. Anyway, I agree w the guy you wanted to hit. (God, maybe I am the guy you wanted to hit!) I thought the improvised song they did had kind of a weird groove; the nonsense words had a catchy, druggy cadence; the pungee snake-charmer pipe thing sounded cool enough to make me go buy one; and the guitar player had some crazy fuzz-box attached to his neck that chewed up the sound in an interesting way. For an experimental performance, I say, Bravo!

I don't think there has ever been so angry a group of hipsters as in that room.

You say this like it's a bad thing.

Two-Headed Boy always reminded me of some of the things in jars in Baldur's Gate 2.
I can't wait to download this. I love Neutral Milk Hotel. I've also tried to translate a Hold Steady album into an Unknown Armies campaign.

Would you save Anne Frank if it meant no In The Aeroplane?

It'd be nice to meet folk who're going to either of the ATP shows in NJ. We're coming from, y'know, Yurp for it. So he better not just do some noodly experimental shit.

They were on the stage for an hour, which involved about 20 minutes of painful guitar, violin, and toy piano feedback, another 10 minutes or so of the band members lying on the ground motionless, and 20 minutes of the band members making and then eating toast while watching a short video clip play on repeat.

Sounds like just another night in Athens to me! Man, I miss that place.

Zero, I do appreciate the perspective. To me the set seemed like a malicious act against his fans, but I might simply be lacking the right attitude.
