Is it possible that the two have been switched? Because Heaven looks a lot like Hell to me. posted by blucevalo at 12:20 PM on August 20, 2011 [3 favorites]
It's beautiful, but both are somehow wrong. If heaven looked like that I would probably turn around and run. posted by sonic meat machine at 12:38 PM on August 20, 2011 [2 favorites]
Heaven is a kind of smoothly operating factory that you approach but never arrive at. Hell is a kind of mechanized organ system that you flee from but never escape. Heaven is the beating heart of an huge living clock. Hell is the groaning of a jail cell door swinging shut. posted by penduluum at 12:41 PM on August 20, 2011 [16 favorites]
Can we get these guys to make a 3d space shooter a la Star Fox or Rez? Because I would totally play that. posted by Wemmick at 12:44 PM on August 20, 2011 [2 favorites]
Typically, Hell was a bit more interesting than Heaven (I especially liked the wing-shapes that opened to either side of the "entrance"), but neither looks like a place I would like to visit, thank you. posted by GenjiandProust at 12:47 PM on August 20, 2011
These are amazing, and I'd never heard of Lesage before. Thank you! I love these hypnotic CGI loops. Here's another that I saw last night (not in person, sadly, the huge 3D version was probably better). posted by biddeford at 12:55 PM on August 20, 2011
Thanks for expressing it better then I could penduluum, in Heaven there is an impression of running toward something, in Hell it's running away from something.
The slit-eye moth wings don't help either. posted by The Whelk at 12:57 PM on August 20, 2011

"Heaven" reminded me of Mandelbrot set zoom animations, with all the busy little bits swirling around and reappearing. Unfortunately the video kept freezing around 38 sec but I think I got the basic idea of self-similar doodads appearing and disappearing.
I wonder how much the animators were influenced by fractals? posted by Quietgal at 3:37 PM on August 20, 2011
Something about these videos is horribly compelling. Part Metropolis, part Tron, part Brazil, and that eerie feeling I get when viewing an artifact from the past, particularly the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I... I... I can't quite put my finger on it. It's just weird.
I think I've watched each about ten times. posted by eoden at 5:46 AM on August 22, 2011 [1 favorite]

I do wish that the painting which inspired them had a bigger version to look at.
