It is sad that he images that are free are much too small to see much detail.

It's so much fun to get lost in this, discovering that the more things stay the same in SF, the more they change.

Discussing this on FB with friends, we discovered there was a huge farmers market on Duboce & Church starting during the war, vanishing in 1947. Why? What happened to make this huge event suddenly vanish? Further investigation turned up this document, written by one of the market founders. Turns out that the Alemany market is that very same market -- they just moved to a city-owned lot. Also interesting reading on how pissed off the grocery retailers were about it, and their attempts to shut it down.

Who else is old enough to remember Playland?

And Fleishhacker Pool? Man this is bringing back memories from when I was, like, 6. Great stuff.

The pictures of the construction of Candlestick Park were really awesome - strange that it is basically the same as it was when it was built...except for the seats. Can you imagine HAND-SANDING all the splinters out of that many wooden seats?!

I just found one of my corner, 33rd and Balboa, in 1935. Absolutely brilliant! I can't wait to lose hours poking around.

This guy geotagged lots of film stills from the TV series Streets of San Francisco. He needs a good interface like these guys have, though.

Vacapinta, my parents got me watching Streets of San Francisco, part for the cheesy police drama, partly for the glory that is Karl Malden's nose, and the rest for nostalgia--there's something fascinating about seeing what's recognizably your city when it was just a little bit younger, seeing what's the same and what's changed.

You can't imagine how thrilled I was to find the SFPL historical photo collection when I was 13.
