I read a couple comments before I actually decided to click the link. When the walker appeared, I snorted green tea out my nose. Now, my wife's going to laugh at me again because I can't ever wear a white shirt without getting something on it.

What store, exactly? Dude walks right past a bikini shop at 0:13...which would be better than nothing. But I guess if you gotta end up somewhere naked, then a parking garage ain't bad... posted by obscurator at 11:57 AM on September 2, 2011

Wasn't there another post recently that feature a number of identical naked CGI men dancing, and then also one where a naked CGI man was sort of a motorcycle? posted by anazgnos at 12:38 PM on September 2, 2011
I can't see one of those ghastly "air dancer" things that they use to advertise car dealerships without imagining the sound it would make if it were actually a living thing. That sound is a high-pitched, screamy "WHOOOOOOOOOOP WHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOP!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOP WHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOP!!!" and it is as loud as an air raid siren.
This video had the same effect on me. I will hate you and those responsible for making it forever. posted by wreckingball at 12:41 PM on September 2, 2011 [2 favorites]

I'm really impressed by how natural the lighting on the guy looks; for the first couple shots I assumed it was a real man and they were doing some sort of stop-motion trickery to make him dance like that.
Has 3D tech progressed to the point where naturalistic lighting like that isn't difficult anymore? Or did someone put a painstaking amount of effort into this, uh, whatever it was? posted by ook at 12:50 PM on September 2, 2011
I think it's closer to the latter than the former; following the profile link shows that the guy who animated this was also the 3D animation lead for Tron: Legacy, and thus presumably knows what he's doing. posted by heeeraldo at 12:57 PM on September 2, 2011
That was awesome in its unsettling hilarity. I feel weird. I feel alive. I feel like this should maybe have a NSFW tag, though I'm not really sure why. I know I wouldn't want my boss to walk in on me watching this, though I must forward it to several friends this very minute. Good & freaky, a delicious combo. posted by but no cigar at 12:57 PM on September 2, 2011 [3 favorites]
Yeah, I'm really impressed by the naturalism too. I was trying to form an opinion whether this was really great CGI or really delightfully staged marionette work, but looking at dlew's CV tips the scales there a bit.

Remember how toward the end of Forrest Gump he just starts running, and people start following him, and turning to him for inspiration? That's what this entity is to me.
Air Dance, of course, was a novel by Ben Mears, who help kill many vampires in Maine back in the '70s. This was before zombies got so big. posted by Ducks or monkeys at 1:18 PM on September 2, 2011
Yeah, I must be too much of a CGI wonk because all I noticed was the shadows and the shading.

Isn't this whole thing based off some Poser-like application? I remember seeing some very random youtube videos years ago where the characters moved in this same way, and it was just the flaw/weakness in the animation/rendering program. posted by Theta States at 7:04 AM on September 27, 2011
