(tangent)...I think the space shuttle was floating around the earth on 9/11...wonder what went through the minds of the astronauts...if the world were to be nuked heavily while they were in orbit, wonder how/when they would come down, and what they would do next...sounds like a movie script.

If it REALLY hits the fan, there are no safe havens. Nuclear winter would get us all.

Al Capone used the undergound tunnels in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, when thing were getting hot for him...

I'm going to stay right where I am, stock up on scotch and cigarettes, and relax. In any event.

terra del fuego. the only place that would be safe in case of a nuclear winter.

What if it's not a nuclear winter? What if it's a steady decent into a police state?

Given that Americans are rushing to abdicate so many of their rights in favor of security, it's not a case of if you don't like your government elect a new one. And, I don't have a high degree of confidence that the judicial branch will be able to protect us. So, if America's liberties begin to erode, what can be done; where can you go?

Norway - reasonably out of the way except that their North Sea oil makes them a target. Aparently they are considering backing out of Nato over the current crisis - they signed up during the cold war and didn't intend on fighting a war without definable borders. One of their many fjords may survive nuclear fallout...

Finland declared its neutrality over the Current Situation last week - I was there at the time and considered the prospect of living through a long dark scandinavian winter, it could be cosy, and would give me some room to breathe away from 24 hour news channel propoganda.

Ibiza. Even Nostradamus said it would be the last place left.

Never felt much like running or hiding, and I'm not afraid of dying.

But while we can talk about finding a safe haven in the hypothetical sense, we have a real life example of thousands and thousands trying to find safety in places like Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Xinjiang Province, China, and Pakistan.

We could try to put together a top ten places to find safety for self and family, but if times get that bad, the safest habor you can find is the one that you can run to that isn't in the direct line of fire.

Whenever I need to relax, I head to the supermarket. No joke. There is something decompressingly simple about buying cheese and produce. Although, it's probably not very safe, in terms of "should the world happen to end," but hey...

What if it's not a nuclear winter? What if it's a steady decent into a police state?

Having worked (as PC support) for 2.5 years in a small real estate company a police state doesn't seem such a bad idea. Mind you, the financial controller and I were the two playing policeman, so I don't know what it's like if you're part of the mob...
