Richard Hamilton, early pop artist, has died age 89.

His Tate Gallery works.

His Gagosian Gallery page.

His Ulysses illustrations.

His famous collage, ‘Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different,
so appealing?’

An essay on that famous collage, Pop in the Age of Boom [PDF]

(Meanwhile, the Detroit Pistons basketball player with the same name is still alive.)

Richard Hamilton's illustrations of Joyce is really smart, and extend/riff on the nature of collage in early modernism. some here As well, his 9 points of pop is just a genius work of marketing.

It's always interesting to me how widely the US and UK "Pop Art" movements diverged after similar beginnings; Hamilton's collages seem almost naive now. Still, sad to see him go.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that Hamilton helped design The Beatles' White Album.
