I'm surprised that Fox News, being the paragon of Fair and Balanced reporting (TM), did not use this footage.

"Unaired," and yet I just watched it...rather convenient, as I would never have thought to watch Fox.

I think I found a new way to phrase my personal support of social services: Jesus stuff.
Jesse: I think, myself, uh, as well as many other people, would like to see a little but more economic justice or social justice—Jesus stuff—as far as feeding the poor, healthcare for the sick.

odinsdream, here is footage of the same producer talking to Michael Moore. I used my superhero power of reading the article to procure this information.

I think it's a weird nod to the wacky Tea Party outfits, except it's too subtle. Needs more powdered wig.

One of the things that has frustrated me about the criticism of the protesters, especially from the theoretical left, is the claim that they are "hippies" and that therefore that makes their existence inherently invalid.

This is usually supported by a photograph of one of the protesters in non-standard clothing.

I've got some problems with that line of thought:

To begin with there aren't any hippies anymore. There haven't been since the mid to late 1970's. Hating on a 40 year old political movement that is long over and done with is just plain crazy. I understand the right wing continuously trying to re-fight the 1960's; they lost back then, and that kind of irks them. What I don't understand is why people ostensibly on the left are backing up the right wing idea that there are still hippies and that they still need to be fought.

More important, when you look at actual photos of the events you can tell that the people in the odd costumes are a super tiny minority. So, yeah, FOX is going to find them and try to pretend that they are all there is. But that's not a realistic picture of things and again people on the left need to stop backing the right wing lies.

Less importantly, but more tellingly, I note that this sort of declaration that the occasional person in an odd costume wasn't portrayed by anyone (left or right) as evidence that the Tea Parties are worthy only of contemptuous dismissal.

As for the interview, yeah I'm not really surprised FOX doesn't want to air it. The guy made some good points and didn't take the FOX news guy's bait.

@filthy light thief I'm going to steal that.

I agree with everything that guy said (well, the rational things) and could barely restrain myself from yelling STAY ON THE FUCKING MESSAGE at him.

I'm not surprised Fox didn't air it; if there were such a thing as Bizarro Fox I wouldn't have been surprised when that hypothetical television network, charged with producing news entertainment from a perspective that agrees entirely with his viewpoint, hypothetically wouldn't have aired it either.

Can this go in the other thread? Until we figure out exactly what Occupy Wall Street is, I think we should keep things to one thread (or talk about the 700+ people who were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge for traffic violations, which is interesting/horrible for a myriad of other reasons that have nothing to do with the protest.)

That said, I think that the characterization of the protestors as "hippies" is actually fairly apt. If the protests had a clear rallying point or set of demands, that criticism might not be valid. Instead, the protest seems to be a re-hashing of every leftist talking point for the past 50 years.

In the best case scenario, a message-less protest does nothing. In the worst, it turns into a riot. And I think that this protest could be headed in that direction, as evidenced by what went down in London a few months ago.

The riots in London did not arise out of a protest.

Somebody better tell the Family at their next Rainbow Gathering.

Now it's true, there aren't any more Hippies, but there are still plenty of hippies. Do you smoke pot, listen to DMB, and spend your summers selling pizza on the music festival circuit? you might be a hippie.
