Fuck Yeah Chinese Myths is a more sober, Chinese-centric version of Myths RETOLD (previously).

Have only read a little so far, but the stuff on Li Bai is really interesting. Thumbs up!

With a name like that, and you say it's "sober"? Yikes!

I wouldn't say that much more sober.

I am however, having fun imagining the mods as horse- and ox-headed demons ready to carry off malefactors.

'Fuck Yeah ______' is just a Tumblr naming convention. It pretty much means 'this is a blog about ______'.

I mean it lacks the inspired craziness of Myths RETOLD (the greatest thing ever posted to MeFi).

I was hoping Fuck Yeah Chinese Myths was the title of a new Master Li and Number Ten Ox novel by Barry Hughart.

Also "Ancient Chinese Bromance" would be an awesome user/band name.

And how did I miss Myths RETOLD?! Geez, it's almost like I don't obsessively reload the front page 15 times a minute.

Yes. Myth's RETOLD is pure distilled joy. A+, will cackle again.

Are there any really good English translations of Chinese myths/legends?

I'm Han Chinese, born in Hong Kong, moved to Canada (Vancouver) when I was 5 (but this was 1983 - this was pre-HK exodus, and I moved to N.Van during the exodus, then I moved to Iowa for college when the fallout of the exodus began populating N.Van). I've missed my "heritage" on and off over the years, and in retrospect, I've latched onto Irish myths/legends - but I would really like to find an accessible way to explore Chinese myths/legends.

Hope me, askmefi

porpoise, I find this local publisher to be pretty good, although they do most comic book versions of the Chinese myths and legends.

Tiny, tiny point of pedantry: Cao Guojiu's name means "Emperor's mother's brother", so you could say it means "Emperor's Uncle". However, the jiu in this case actually means "little uncle" (xiaojiu 小舅), which is a term used for one's wife's brother. So the term "Guojiu" is usually given to the brother-in-law of the Emperor (and because an Emperor can have upwards of 3 thousand wives and concubines, this honorific is usually reserved for the Empress's brother).

Also, just realised from this post that the chap doing this is in Singapore. Waterloo street is where one of our most famous temples to the Goddess of Mercy is.
