Warrior Open Golf Tournament

Today is the first round of the Warrior Open, a golf tournament for servicemen who were severely wounded in the Global War on Terror. There are 20 entrants. Here are pictures from the practice round.

It's being sponsored by President George W. Bush, but please, let's not turn this post into an anti-Bush hate fest. This is about the gutsy soldiers who aren't letting their wounds stop them from living. (I don't know if I'd have that much courage.)

What a thing is "about" varies on the person.

You look at these pictures and see men defying their disabilities.

I look at these pictures and see something else.

Really? Because when I look at the macro view of these photos, I see the same thing as you. When I look at the micro version however I see people defying disabilities. It's like an optical illusion, two subjects in one photo.

If you can ever call such a thing photogenic, these injuries are easier to embrace and pay tribute to--and, by extension, feel good about in that time-honored way--than those who have been turned into shades by PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.

Would sure like to see Dubya partnering with one of those folks for a round, and have to talk them through it. Just for a taste of what their families will go through all day for the rest of their lives.
