Apps for Metro Chicago: Community Round The community round finalists for the Apps for Metro Chicago (http://appsformetrochicago.com/) contest were announced on Friday. Dan O'Neil, founder of EveryBlock (previously) was the presenter (video of the event).
The winners are determined by public vote, which ends on Friday 10/14. To vote, you must create an account and then vote for at least 3 apps for you ballot to be accepted. Full disclosure: I am one of the finalists, though I won't point out which app is mine.
The community finalists are:
Chicago Service Request Helper - Use this site to store additional information about a service request such as a picture, mapped location, and note. A user can add and edit their own notes and view all existing notes, but personally identifiable information is not displayed. The site has been pre-loaded with open requests for graffiti removal, tree debris, sanitation code compliants, potholes, and streetlights. Vote for them.
iFinditChicago - Android app that connects Chicago residents to vital food, medical and shelter resources faster. Vote for them.
OkCopay - OkCopay is a ground breaking comparison search engine for medical care. With OkCopay you simply search for the procedure you need, compare local providers, and view their actual prices. We aim to take the mystery out of health care pricing. Vote for them.
allSchedules - AllSchedules gives you access to a huge collection of transit schedules, for different transport modes (bus, metro, train, tram ferry, etc.), in multiple cities around the world. Chicago is one of those cities, including schedules for Metra, CTA and Pace Suburban Bus. Vote for them.
Techno Finder - Techno Finder uses the City of Chicago data source to locate public technology sources in a zip code. Simply call the phone number and technology resources in your area will be read over the phone. Select one of the locations on the keypad to hear more information about that resource. The location can then be sent to you via text message. Vote for them.
Vacant Building Finder - The Vacant and Abandoned Building Finder is a tool for helping people and organizations find buildings in Chicago that are not in use and potentially hazardous to the neighborhood around them. The site also contains an extensive FAQ regarding laws and policy on vacant and abandoned buildings for owners and citizens.Vote for them.
Fixit! - Chicagoans: 311 is so last century. Tell Chicago what needs attention now straight from your Android device! Fixit! allows you to report what's broken, what needs cleaning or a simple check up so they can direct city resources where they're needed most. Go beyond reporting and get involved - Fixit! will occasionally ask you to check out reports submitted by other users to help the city determine which areas should be tended to first. Earn badges and social network recognition for your participation! Vote for them.
Chicago Local Guide - Calendar of EVENTS, Food Trucks, ART galleries, culture, points of interest, sports and more. Follow your favorite events on Twitter with #hashtags already included, share using Facebook, Email, SMS and other applications. Vote for them.
Mi Parque - Mi Parque is a placemaking app that help residents of the community contribute and share their vision for the future of Little Village’s new park. Community members can submit ideas about how to make this park and our other open spaces safer, greener and healthier places that meet community needs. Vote for them.
Got Game? - GotGame is a new tool for residents to use the parks near them to join each other in the activities of their choice. Vote for them.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a neat thing going on but someone who is not you need to make this post since including a "vote for it" link to your own project basically makes this a "we could ban you" problem. So, maybe someone else who is not a finalist could make a similar post, but not this post. Sorry. -- jessamyn
Wow -- as a Chicagoan this seems like the type of contest where we all win.

The subtext behind all of this is the cool datasets that Chicago is releasing to the public.
http://data.cityofchicago.org/
Some of the info is pretty amazing -- like a database of lobbyists (!), the salaries of everyone working for the city, etc.
Seriously, check it out, they're doing funky things with open governance concepts.
