I don't know why I expected a more Hetfield-esque vocal style, but I cracked up at, "Say yo pwayers wittle one/Don't foget my son/to incwude evwyone." But, yes, that was great. I had a friend who worked for one of the Schools of Rock, and I went to one of their graduation shows, where probably 3/4 of the songs were songs I knew from Rock Band, which is hard to separate from merely being many of the most popular songs ever, but I still took it to confirm my theory that Rock Band is going to give rise to a generation of highly technical musicians, and especially drummers. There are a lot of highly competent preadolescent drummers out there nowadays.

That's a meaningless statement, not least in light of the fact that prior to the production of the Black Album it must've surely seemed like all of the members of Metallica would rather have killed themselves than make a 'pop metal' album. But they did. And say what you will, but that album changed my life and many others as well who would not have been introduced to metal any other way. Never minding the fact, of course, that it is actually one of their best albums.

Also, Wolfdog is correct. Metallica riffs (and all proper metal riffs) are played downpicked even when it often sounds like alternate picking. The classic example is the riff in the song 'Master of Puppets.' Hetfield is metal rhythm guitar incarnate. There are some who say "Oh, but I can alternate-pick it and it sounds the same because I have good technique." It usually doesn't sound the same, though. But mostly it's the principle. Downpicking is more metal, because it is more difficult. 'The easy way' should rarely apply in the creation and performance of metal music. Also, alternate picking something that should be downpicked makes ou look stupid and lazy on stage, and girls will NOT show you their boobs.

Hey, it's Zoe! My 6.5-year old daughter and discovered that YT channel the other week and had a blast checking out vids of all the kids--great talent all around. Don't miss Zoe at the age of 6 playing the theme to Pirates of the Caribbean and, at 7, playing Sweet Child O Mine and Cooking in the Kitchen (The Crave). And here's a vid of the Mini Band's first club gig. Huge kudos to the folks at Newbury Rock School - they are good people.

Eight-year-old Zoe Thomson playing that guitar solo is just about the awesomest thing I've ever seen in my entire goddamn life. I have never wished I'd had a daughter so much as I did at that moment. She's like the Platonic ideal of the coolest eight-year-old girl. (Normally, I'd think that her hairstyle and clothing shouldn't be so conventional...but it really works as a counterpoint in this context.) Ten-year-old Charlie Emmons on drums isn't flashy, but entirely solid, better than many competent adult drummers. I say this as a lifelong drummer, myself. Thanks for this.

Actually, even Metallica lets it go from the likes of Whiplash and Damage, Inc. Rumors of Hetfield's unceasing downpicking are a bit exaggerated.

A yes, 4:24 there was bass. But he's been ignored and left out of the limelight, as would be appropriate for the Black album. If they were playing something from Justice, however, then they would've just thrown an octave pedal on the guitar and the bassist could've sat out. Also, in fairness, Lars's drumming isn't bad. It's his talking which is awful.
