does anyone remember this kid's show "I think Candle Cove ran for only a couple months in '71, not '72. I was 12 and I watched it a few times with my brother. It was channel 58, whatever station that was. My mom would let me switch to it after the news. Let me see what I remember."

Thanks to the mods for undeleting this. This gave me shivers--very appropriate for Halloween! Reminded me a bit of Kelly Link's "Magic for Beginners." And honestly, I think that every time I remember some half-forgotten TV show and go to look it up on the internet, this kind of exchange is pretty much what I'm afraid of happening.

I'm a huge fan of creepypasta and urban legends like this, especially the ones grounded in reality. Unknown Armies is a game built in this sort of world and its simply delightful.

Dammit, I thought this was going to be real. There WAS a TV show I used to watch that took place in a cove, although it was probably in the late 70s or maybe early 80s. I had to have been a Sid and Marty Krofft thing, but I don't remember anything else about it. Maybe Sigmund and the Sea Monsters? Clips I've found don't look quite right.

I think I like "Candle Cove" most of all because its...well...creepypasta done well....there are so many lousy/stupid stories out there that the few which are genuinely done well really stand out.

I didn't realize until now that blending childhood TV nostalgia with horror is a thing. Very psychologically potent and creepy stuff!

I used to have this awful memory, a bad dream I had where the opening jingle ended, the show faded in from black, and all the characters were there, but the camera was just cutting to each of their faces, and they were just screaming, and the puppets and marionettes were flailing spastically, and just all screaming, screaming. The girl was just moaning and crying like she had been through hours of this. I woke up many times from that nightmare. I used to wet the bed when I had it. This is pretty great.

Agreeing with treepour. Is this type of story closely bound to a couple of generations? TV after the cable revolution isn't going to create the same expectations for children , and especially after VCRs and Netflix and Youtube.

At first, I thought "that's really not that creepy" but then it stuck with me for the rest of the day and kind of fermented in my memory and became so much creepier. That was interesting and absolutely unexpected. Any work of horror can do cheap shocks and gore (and I don't like those things anyway). But few works stick with me and get scarier as time passes. That's pretty masterful.

pfh, assuming you're not being tongue-in-cheek (impossible to tell given the context), read the story beneath the comic, or read the original posting of the story that jess linked to. Fwiw, I didn't see the story underneath the comic either, and it was jess's link that clued me in.
