And here I was thinking that the boy was going to antagonize the dog, and the dog was going to bite the girl in the ankle, and the sword would fly out of her hand and stab grandma in the glasses. posted by Cool Papa Bell at 12:54 PM on November 2, 2011 [4 favorites]

I just so happened to be listening to "The Bullpen" by Dessa while watching this. It matched up heck of well. posted by kavasa at 1:51 PM on November 2, 2011
I'm no sword expert, but I believe that is a Jian (剑).
There's at least one more video of the same guy on the BR channel. This time grandma participates by helping with the beer!
Surely drinking beer while flicking a knife around your grandma is a perfectly safe idea for a new fad. Beats tebowing anyway. posted by Winnemac at 1:51 PM on November 2, 2011 [2 favorites]

That's what I thought at first too, but there are a couple of moments where you can see it's actually got a bit of a curve and it's a touch heavier towards the point. posted by restless_nomad at 2:00 PM on November 2, 2011
This was just... eh. There isn't enough there to be interesting.
"I so much want to see this be the future of ironic line dancing.
Because, imagine, dark club, drunk hipsters, and blades a-flashing?
We appear to be only watching one half of an entertainment showdown, the other half being you in front of your webcam.
Suddenly this got a little more freaky. posted by linux at 3:08 PM on November 2, 2011
I am grateful for your recaps. I, for one, could not take my eyes off the painting-on-velvet hanging on the outside of the (garage?) door, and wondering "Wha...why?!" posted by peagood at 4:18 PM on November 2, 2011

It's a dao.
If you pause the during some of the few static moments the sword looks straight. It appears curved when she whips it around because the sword bends with her movements. Cool.
Also, the original video toftflin pointed out is titled "Jian Sword Dancing" which means I can now declare victory and run away before any pesky nonconforming facts are discovered. posted by Winnemac at 4:34 PM on November 2, 2011
I can't believe I live in an age where I am able to watch that sort of thing. In real life, I wouldn't have ALLOWED that to happen. Thank you SO MUCH for posting it. Made my day. posted by bonobothegreat at 7:28 PM on November 2, 2011
i am dying to know who put this together. it's obviously professionally done. someone in video production, for a lark? it's perfect. whatever person or team built this, should make a movie, if they haven't already. posted by facetious at 8:35 PM on November 2, 2011
A bit off topic, but the original thread is closed and it's in the realm of popular Youtube vids... Marquese Scott aka NONSTOP did a bit of his dance on Ellen. posted by kmz at 9:58 PM on November 2, 2011

And here I was thinking...
That granny would pick up the mop and start a major boogie (using BOTH hands,) then knocking the little twerps over, ending with a grand finale by picking the dog up and balancing him standing on her head.

THIS IS SO GOOD. It makes me feel like I'm wasting my life. I HOPE this is a viral video because whatever it is advertising, I will take a dozen dozen. posted by GilloD at 12:57 PM on November 3, 2011
The more I watch it, the more I realize that this is a masterpiece. There's not an atom out of place. Easily the best youtube video I've seen. posted by facetious at 8:43 PM on November 3, 2011
I LOVE that the boy brings his gran a beer as the prelude to his act.
The girl has no balance whatsovever; she's just using the practice sword as a prop. Ya know, an argument could be made that it was all very ethnically insensitive, but, <shrug> like, whateverz. I wonder what state that backyard was in.... posted by porpoise at 10:40 PM on November 3, 2011
I wonder what state that backyard was in.... The original uploader toftlin links to lists "SIUC" as a school affiliation. Southern Illinois University Carbondale? Perhaps the location is around there somewhere?
I am also totally mesmerized by this video, for me the bizarre punctum is the plastic bag hanging on a doorknob in both of the videos. A colleague referred to it (and the mop, and the velvet paintings, and the mise-en-scene in general) as 'ripples in the ordinary' when we were discussing it yesterday... posted by jrb223 at 1:30 PM on November 4, 2011
