Did the earth move for you? Encouraging to see good things coming from bad. Suddenly bickering with a partner doesn't seem so clever. Hugging and - yes - sex might just be the right response. Relationships stronger after 9.11? How's yours?

If someone was an asshole of the sort who *has* to start fights or be pointlessly cruel before this, he or she is going to go back to being an conniving a-hole or drama queen at some point in the future - there's something of poor character in there to begin with, maybe, or just bad chemistry bringing out the worst in people. A disaster doesn't change one's essential nature or character anyway. People can change, sure, but over time, not in one or two weeks.

I am now in favor of nuking Afghanistan, Iraq, Boston, and anywhere else that any of those responsible may be lurking....

Um, ex-fucking-scuse me? I live right by Boston. So does a lot of my family, and most of my friends.

You'd kill us all on the off chance that someone with responsibility might be in the area? What if the terrorists flew out of your town? Would you be so eager to nuke it then?

I know you're probably not serious, but man, think before you say these things. And if you are serious, I think my boyfriend would like to kick your ass.

I'm not interested in either your boyfriend (nice bloke though I'm sure) or nuking Boston though. The IRA were freedom fighters after all. Hence targetting busy shopping centres on Saturday mornings to get the max' number of mothers and children.

Well holy Jesus, using that (flawed) logic you could take out New York as well! Because, like it or not the people of NYC were first on the list for the Sinn Fein fundraisers.

And do you know where the largest donations to the Sinn Fein / IRA came from? The FDNY, believe it or not.

Sorry Tom, that was a bit OTT. The logic is flawed - which you might think would explain the 'I have no interest in nuking...' bit.

The feigned "what? People in Boston responsible for terrorism?" bullshit pissed/es me off. I was rounding a street corner in Manchester in '96 when a bomb wiped out a chunk of the city centre. I was unharmed (I was going the right way round the corner) and knew only one person who was only slightly injured but I am very sensitive to anyone and anything which I perceive as differentiating between an act of terror on an American city and an act of terror on a British one. CrayDrygu wasn't doing that I know but I saw Boston, terror and the colour red all at the same time.

I did know there were many contributions from NYC but I had no idea about the FDNY. What can I say? When I saw the NYC mayor first of all on TV after the attacks I thought the FDNY on his cap looked more like a bad spelling of 'phoney'. At first I was thinking of the photo opportunity of a politician wearing something like that on any other kind of day. Now it makes more sense. Terrorist supporters you say? Now there's irony. God speed to those there who didn't. Lots to look at and think about for those who did.

Let's just say that American donations to the IRA and their ilk will be a lot less substancial now. At least, I hope so.

But you can't be surprised people in the FDNY gave so much money - the number of Irish-Americans in the fire department is really hight - one only has to look at the names of the dead to see that.

I'm not surprised now that you mention it, I honestly hadn't put two and two together up until now. There hasn't been an ounce of schadenfreude in me over this at all. Not until I saw the Boston reference earlier that is. Gone now, on with the show. More terror and sex.

This story doesn't included anything new that wasn't also included in the "Salon" story that was posted here a week ago. Oh good on the press for wringing every new (really tired) angle out of this tragedy, but do we have to jump on every new catch phrase the press dreams up? road rage? RSI? "Terror sex?" (package it like it's something new!)

Yes, I suppose we do.
