Collateral damage in the war on Drugs, after all, had this guy not had a felony conviction for dealing coke, none of this would ever have happened in the first place.

Other then that, you can see how this is a tough issue. If you don't want felons owning guns, then you can't just allow their siblings to buy them and give them access (I would imagine). Would he have been convicted if the Jury believed he didn't know the gun was there? It seems kind of unlikely, although possible.

Not far from his shop, the Uniontown Bar & Grill has been in the press. Sad news all around -- enough material for a DC spin-off of The Wire.

Everybody else has a gun, so why can't we?

Sad? Yes. But the same thing happens in pretty much every major city every day of the week. Seconding Lutoslawksi.

Heartbreaking, yeah, but not quite kafkaesque. DC's neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River have long been plagued with poverty and extreme levels of crime.

This is hardly the greatest injustice to grace Congress Heights, probably even in this past week.

It's almost a bit sad that the proposed opening of a Wal-Mart is probably going to be the best thing to happen East of the River in a long time.

There's a good FPP to be had here, but this isn't it.

Oh, and don't lump all of Southeast into one neighborhood. "Anacostia" is actually fairly small. It's insulting, and doing a disservice to the people who live there.

Also, Mike DeBonis is usually a better writer than this. He did some great work when he was working at the CityPaper, which I maintain still does a far better job of covering local issues than WaPo ever has.

tl;dr Supposedly reformed drug dealer gets sent back to the pocket for having a gun that wast his. I don't see how this is Kafkaesque. Did I miss the part where he was transformed into a beetle?

They edited out the part where the shopkeeper turned into a giant cockroach because of gun control. It was there in the morning edition.

How about this: "We the police can do nothing to protect you, and we will also not allow you to protect yourself. You choices are be robbed and/or shot, go out of business, or go to jail." Sounds like something Kafka might have appreciated just fine.

Done.

Oh wait, by "this" did you mean the post rather than your comment?

The guy sells someone an adult shoe and a kid's shoe and calls it a pair. Customer tries to get wrong shoe replaced, guy says, "No, Show me a receipt." (Instead of, "Golly gee, I made a mistake. Let me fix that.") Customer returns with Dad. Guy figures they are armed (because everyone in this neighborhood is armed, doncha know) and ducks into closet where there is a shotgun. Dad hears the gun cocked...

I don't know. Guy may not belong back in prison but I question whether he ought to running an enterprise that depends on customers.
