adidas accused of animal cruelty

over on facebook, animal rights activists are decrying the slaughter of thousands of Ukrainian street dogs by the local authorities, which are paying a bounty of 25 euros for every carcass. a real shitstorm is currently facing the adidas facebook page. adidas is sponsoring the Euro 2012 football tournament and thus getting blamed for supporting the Ukraine indirectly in their inhumane endeavor. adidas meanwhile is demonstrating their social competence: every critical comment outside their single response is deleted within seconds.

I realize this post should have links to various articles but all I could find were a bunch of german posts like this one or this one. I hope you'll still find this topic interesting enough to warrant an FPP.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sounds like a mess, but if you don't have the material to make a solid post about it, you kind of need to just not make a post about it. -- cortex

'Shitstorm' is German too these days? What a marvellous example of cross-cultural exchange.

In Bulgaria they capture them, neuter them, and tag their ears. They become incredibly docile, and don't reproduce. Some even adopt them.

Right! The only animals that should die for football are the ones that the ball is made out of.

I would prefer more information about the particular context and struggles of a country as different from the US as Ukraine is. Knee-jerk condemnation is easy, but that ain't a way to understand problems, and you gotta understand problems before you can solved them.

I wish these animal rights activists would put their considerable empathy, energy and attention on the plight of the rhinocerous now that the horn is more expensive than gold. With all due respect, the dog will not be extinct any time soon.

Didn't Greece do this exact same thing before the Olympics?

Wild dogs are lethal in Eastern Europe, there are good reasons for removing them. Here is video of a woman getting attacked in the Ukraine (No blood, dude with a shovel saves the day)

In a lot of areas people, especially women, the elderly and the disabled, live in fear of them.
