Bush had plans to back Arafat before 9/11.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If the Bush administration was actually planning to move ahead with this agenda, I don't see how they can back off now. Then again, how can they possibly spin this to look like anything other than capitulation given the Current Situation? I expect to see more press leaks ("We were gonna do this anyhow, honest!") and hand-wringing over the next several weeks, but probably precious little action.

The link ok but the title wanting. Bush was not backing Arafat. He was in favor of a state for Palestine. The UN had \offered this in 1948 and the Arabs en masse rejected it.
Clearly, as the Jews in Israel found out, a people without a state is in deep shit. The Palestinians need a state, deserve a state. But it won't be because Bush tells them what to do and how to do it. It will come about when the two warring sides sit down and work out things.
Bush, earlier in his term ,avoided getting involved; now in many areas of the world he sees how he must be involved.

We had to have our own terror attack before we give Israel any respect. Pathetic. Israel is a Sovereign for crying out loud, it is their prerogative to give state or status to their own people. Have they not earned this right?
