I mean, it's advertising absolutely nothing but explosions. So, no. Not in the traditional sense. They built something to go viral, and that it has. People will talk about Old Spice as a lovely ancillary benefit, which is pretty much their point.

Heh, on my fourth hit or so, I see a picture of two tanker trucks on a road. the center one explodes, and there is a delay. I think to myself "That would've totally blown up the second one if this was a video game", and as if my mind were being read, the second one explodes.

Also, I have to say the hand slapping down is immensely satisfying on its own.

lomcovak: "This is fun but I am not sure what it does for Old Spice as a brand. It makes me laugh but I don't especially want to buy their deodorant or have increased affinity for them."

It is a curious question. For me, it doesn't make me especially want to buy their deodorant. But there is no commercial that is going to make me change deodorants -- marketing doesn't work like that for me, and despite how people often react to it -- or how it is often directed, I don't think it works that way for most people, especially because people -- and I don't just mean people in "my/our circle' are much more media savvy than we give them credit for when it really comes down to it. (And I definitely think they are more media savvy then most advertisting give them credit for.)

But it really does increase my affinity for the brand. It makes me want to like them, even if it's not going to change my behavior, and weirdly, these days, I think that matters more than we realize.

Also, BOOM mother fucker BOOM.

Spoiler: when it got to the point of multiple explosions, I was very very happy. And I also had the same reaction about the multiple tankers.

Pretty sure the one with the two tanker trucks was filmed in Long Beach, CA. The cylindrical building is pretty recognizable and the building to the left of it in the explosion looks like it might match.
posted by Defenestrator at 4:02 PM on December 9, 2011

(To be more specific, it looks like it was filmed on the other side of the building on Seaside Way, but there's no street view back there)

XQUZYPHYR - It's already gone massively viral and if even a fraction of the people who see/mention it point out it's part of the Old Spice Guy or the Old Spice Brand then the company has just created an insane amount of cultural imprint/free advertising for the cost of about six hours of design time and a hosting fee.

Yup, Old Spice has been steadily working towards being less of "one of the many deodorant brands" to "that deodorant brand that makes amusing/cool/clever ads." You wouldn't think that would make a difference but with a cheap purchase like deodorant that doesn't usually involve tons of thought I guarantee there will be tons of people who will remember this difference in the Old Spice brand and use it as an easy way to make a choice.

AFAIK, deodorant is all basically the same shit. I expect that Old Spice comes from the same 55-gallon drums of DEODORANT, HUMAN, MALE that several other brands do.

But as long as (A) it doesn't cost any more than the other shit, (B) it smells more or less okay, and (C) they have awesome funny ads, you know what?

I'll buy their shit.

I hate to say this, but I was frankly rather underwhelmed by the explosions in question. They were all show and no force - kind of cosmetic explosions, more than devastating explosions. And while I guess those explosions are better than no explosions at all, a big red button of that calibre raises certain expectations. Best not to disappoint.
posted by bicyclefish at 5:30 PM on December 9, 2011 [1 favorite]
