Part of me wants to say this is just plain stupid, and the players (and families) have every right to object and have the cards pulled.

But, on the other hand, complaining about the implication of violence and getting all indignant about it after spending years beating the crap out of other players....hmmmm

I never took my sons to a hockey game, I couldn't figure out a way to justify the intentional violence and lack of sportsmanship.

Perfect complement to this. How can anyone be a hockey fan after reading this? National Brain Damage League.

When I was 13, Rob Ray came to speak at my school about ...

Well, I'm not sure what he came to talk to us about. All the questions he was asked were about stuff like whether he'd ever carried a feud off the ice and attacked a player outside a game, how often he got into bar brawls, and how one becomes an enforcer, whether scouts would look for OHL players with the most fights and penalty minutes.

He tried to stay on message, tried to explain that he hadn't been an enforcer in his junior years, tried to explain that he didn't go around beating people up in the off season, but it was no use compared to the weight of questioning from pubescent boys.

... He was probably there to talk to us about leadership, or drugs, or something, but we knew who he was by the stats on his hockey card.

Extremely poor timing.

The fighting would end if they wanted it to. I don't think they fight like that in Olympic hockey. The NBA ended fighting after this.

There's almost no fighting anymore. There's a fight every 3 games. Used to be 3 a game.

The face shields have changed everything. Fighting was about punishing the other side for hitting people in the face with a stick. Now it doesn't matter. When a guy had 435 PIM in a season nobody had a helmet.

Wow, incredibly poor taste.

Do kids even collect buy sports cards anymore, or is it all pretty much exclusively gaming cards?

I bought hockey cards when I was a kid mostly because my friends did; it was kind of neat to have on hand the stats on players (whereas now, it's a google away, and on mobile devices nonetheless) and the potential thrill of opening a pack and getting a "rare" card.

Indeed. If only they could play in a civilized league like the NFL.

Hopefully one day the NHL just bans fighting altogether. I might go back to being a fan again.
