Race For the Cure In the midst of our mass grief and generosity are we forgetting the daily victims of this disease that also robs children of a parent? Are normal charities being short changed?

No and no.

Swift disasters require sharp and hard responses.

No-one has forgotten breast cancer - but sometimes the world requires some attention.

will start making money soon I hope - when things have calmed down and the really important stuff becomes obvious.

Until then - live with the after-effects of fear - it's what the fools who arranged the whole thing wanted.

I was a little surprised that Yahoo turned its site pink for an entire day to promote breast cancer awareness and received only $5,000 in donations. (I donated a little; I'm a sucker for any online donation fund that displays the money total in real time.)

However, considering the millions donated to the American Red Cross and other charities this month, it's still an amazing period of public generosity.

I work for a major health nonprofit, and I know we've taken a fairly major hit as of late -- due to both the disaster as well as a general slowdown in the economy.

I volunteer with the Designated Drivers Central Valley in California, and I know that our contributions haven't gone down.

I hope that something good that comes from "Wartime America" is a increase in civic participation.
