Here is Incursion: Halls of the Goblin King, a computer game that adapts the 3rd Edition rules of the Dungeons & Dragons game to roguelikes.

THIS LOOKS AWESOME.

That said, I don't seem to be able to resize the window in OS X, which makes the game nigh-unplayable.

Is there a term for disappearance from polite society for a brief period to play text based RPGs, sort of like Rumspringa for geeks?

Well Mrs. Guy, give me a kiss and give my love to the little guys, for I now embark on an adventure and who knows when I shall return.

If you see a dead kobold on the floor, it's the corpse of my unable-to-find-a-way-through-the-big-oak-door self.

Okay, I figured out how to resize the window. This is pretty sweet.

Right now I'm befuddled by how to pick up individual items in a pile. Not finding this information in the manual. I feel like a seven-year-old. Auto-loot isn't working for me, either, because I don't have an F8, and hitting Fn-8 isn't working. Please hope me.

Nope.

Too busy figuring out how to get past level 11 with anything other than a Troll Berserker in stone soup. I'm terrible at these games, but they're the only ones I play...

Stand on top of them and hit g...the inventory screen took a little getting used to with swapping out the 'in the air' item with whatever inventory slot moving it to...and what's this? Threatened while trying to organize my belongings to make room for 5 feet of silken rope! Dead AGAIN!

Oh, great! I figured out how to do it. Thanks.

I'm dead now. Shadow ooze. Here lies a novice barbarian.

This is wonderful, but my jaw is mostly dropped because I can't quite believe that this natural innovation took this long to surface.

Incursion 0.6.9I for Win32 Systems ( 1853 downloads).
Incursion 0.6.9H4 for Linux ( 4725 downloads).
Incursion 0.6.9H4 for Mac OSX 10.4 (Intel) ( 1655 downloads).

Does this mean Linux on the desktop has arrived?

It's like popcorn consumption at the theater - being one of the only choices boosts the numbers.

D&D classes are not designed to solo - the game assumes you will be one of approximately four characters with diverse abilities. Also RAW healing rates in D&D are abysmal (1hp/level/day base). How does it address these problems? Are the walls made out of solid healing magic?

Every time I see "Incursion" in reference to D&D, I think it's the Dungeon 100/Polyhedron 159 thing. But it never is. =(

Well suck.

I figured using a 31" Sony HDTV as a monitor would be cool. And it mostly is.

Except for games like this and a lot of Flash games that can't handle the aspect ratio.

Gah.

Well, you all have fun, kids. I'm going to go be grumpy now.

For healing: I believe the game uses fairly traditional rules, so to heal you'll need magical means (like potions) or to rest. Note that one difference to standard 3E rules is that the game doesn't use Vancian magic, opting instead to use a roguelike-traditional magic point system that makes magic users considerably more powerful at low levels.

Good news for me: my 5 month daughter just gave up sleep in favor of play in the middle of the night. Now I can join her...

Incursion is definitely my favorite roguelike. The amount of character customization is insane, not wildly unbalanced, and lots of fun. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in a couple of years and it was supposed to be part I of an epic. It's understandable, though, that the creator would lose interest over the course of several years, especially when Incursion has never attained the recognition that I believe it deserves.
