This Christmas, a holiday tradition undergoes a digital rebirth with Fireplace [Mac/PC], the pixelated demake of The Yule Log. It'll even incinerate whatever you type.

Something so simple and I have to download and install it? I thought this was the age of the web browser.

How's it supposed to get out of the browser and incinerate your hard drive with its trojan virus cooties if you don't download it?

Thanks executable from the internet.

Thexecutable from the internet.

But yeah, flash would be bad but acceptable, and HTML 5 would be ideal. How am I supposed to enjoy this on my theoretical iPad?

Minecraft fireplace! My kids approve. Thanks Smart Dalek.

Oh you ivory tower types with your browser-based sandboxing, live a little!

A benefit of using Flash on my Mac is the it would also heat the room the same way a real fireplace would.

Super fun! Until you type "water" :(

I ate a marshmallow cooked on the copper fire and now I don't feel so well.

Thanks, but I keep warm by the fire of plastic baby Jesuses stolen from lawn nativity sets. Bonus is that the fumes make me see visions of sugarplums and demons dance in my head.

I was pretty overjoyed at seeing this. Finally, a simple thing that doesn't require a bloody supercomputer to run smoothly due to being implemented in a horribly inefficient platform running atop an application never designed for executable! Platformers that ran fine on Amigas or C64s struggle on even mildly aged hardware when they're implemented in Flash.

I'm also enjoying this far more than I should. Kudos for the heads-up on copper - anyone know of any other easter eggs?

"uncopper" returns the healthy yellow glow.

I liked the fireworks. Will have to keep this hidden from the family, they already disapprove of my addiction to the Netflix fireplace.

Only other command I've found is 'poke'.

They forgot "fart" in this version. What a horrible bug.

How do I run it windowed? I like to multitask around my campfire.

From the second link:

"My father worked 3 jobs and when he came home for X-mas eve after shopping at the midnight madness sale at the old Rockaway Sales, the Yule Log was sooo wonderful."

Ah, Rockaway Sales ... I think there's suddenly something in this former Jerseyite's eye.

Christmas does something. Supposedly the konami code works but my down arrow is busted so I can't test it.

Can you make the SVG Fireplace so we can type words into it and make it do things?

yeah, you have a whole operating system on your computer. thousands of people spent millions of man-hours writing it. it's incredibly complex and considering the enormity of what it has to do, works incredibly well. a true human accomplishment. why wouldn't you want to use it?

also as far as i can tell the konami code does nothing, but if you let the marshmallow catch on fire "blow" puts it out. "christmas" is bizarre, possibly it's for debugging?

Both "hotdog" and "marshmallow" can be "eat"-en.

I typed "xmas" and the big pixelated flames separated from the log, shrunk down to smaller pixelated flames and hovered above the log. Weird effect. Trying to figure out if it's a bug or intentional.

"copper" and "uncopper" can be typed again to change the fire color, even while roasting marshmallows or hotdogs.

Also (don't see anyone saying it) if you type smore AFTER you cook your marshmallow... it will make it :)

This was a big hit in my household, probably due to the general Minecraft theme of our gift exchange.
