Well, that was depressing.

The cover with the single Ramone left was the saddest thing.

The Abbey Road one is real creepy.

That's some very skillful photoshoppery. Rather than the solo act jackets, which feature, say, empty chairs and such, the band ones that leave in a surviving member or two seem especially poignant. The Ramones (last man standing), the Beatles' Abbey Road (with only Paul and Ringo)... those really kind of gave me pause.

But they're all really quite good.

Paul is dead.

The Ian Dury was the one that really got to me. So sad.

Jeff Buckley - Grace must have been a pain in the ass with all those curtain folds.

Submissive or not, that lion must be long dead.

The group ones generally work better for me; I'm amazed Street Survivors by Lynyrd Skynyrd isn't there.

I'm amazed that no one in the Rolling Stones is dead yet.

Brian Jones aside...yeah, what are the odds of that?

I have an informal bet with a friend that Ringo will be the last Beatle standing.

The Ol' Dirty Bastard one was creepy, but it made me laugh out loud. Weird.

I showed this to my wife, and she didn't get it. I had to explain the concept of memento mori.

The Ramones one is the creepiest to me because that photo is so iconic and the void is aesthetically obvious. It's still strange to think that all that's left of the Ramones are the drummers. All of them.

The Who one is quite jarring. Thanks for the sad but fascinating link.

Well...That sort of depends...

I guess he didn't have time to do Sgt Pepper?

Well...That sort of depends...

Sorry, for purposes of the current discussion, Brian Jones doesn't really count. He died too long ago, and the Stones have gone on so long without him. It's kinda like, say, Pigpen, with the Grateful Dead.

Speaking of which, I didn't go through every single page of the site... wonder if there's a Garcia-less Grateful Dead jacket?
posted by flapjax at midnite at 6:31 AM on January 7, 2012

ahem... popping back to the site I see there's both a Search and an Archive, and, no, no Dead. So to speak.

Even though it's a painted cover rather than a photo, a doctored 3-Way Tie (For Last) would be pretty stunning. And it's a smaller base that would recognize it, but one that would impact me greatly is Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts.

Needs some Jimi Hendrix Experience for a truly depressing image.

The Elvis Presley Cover made me think that the site needed more less Joe Strummer. And of course it's not Strummer on the cover of London Calling so that kind of sinks the ironic juxtaposition.

One day, perhaps we'll be able to do this with movies.

It could be done with movies now. Every frame would have to be heavily photoshopped, like these jackets have been, to remove whatever characters from the film. Each single frame. It would be insanely labor-intensive, but it could certainly be done.

The cover with the single Ramone left was the saddest thing.

Agreed. The only change I would've made would be to change "Ramones to "Ramone".

I get the feeling that the Double Fantasy cover is exactly the way Yoko would want it.

Sort of the opposite has been done with movies - Coca Cola engaged in a little necromancy years ago, pressing the ghosts of Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Louis Armstrong into their service. Franken Cola.

Infinite Jest: Man, everyone always forgets about CJ.

CJ wore the jacket and took the surname, but calling him a Ramone is like calling
Nick Sheppard and Vince White members of the Clash.

I dunno, it seems to me like having the love of your life murdered in front of you by an insane person might be kind of a bummer.

I get that you think she made your favorite band break up or whatever, but, geez, she's a human being.

The ODB one really got to me. I know he was a crass, unrepentant weirdo, but there's something uniquely tragic about ODB that RZA really tapped into in the Tao of Wu book. He blames himself for ODB's death saying that there was Russell Jones, RZA's sweet, silly cousin from Brooklyn, and then there was ODB, the clown prince of excess that you saw and heard in the Wu-Tang records. He talks about watching him fall apart and all the while encouraging him to be less Russell, and more ODB. Every time I see an interview with ODB's mom Cherry, and she talks about how much she loved her son Rusty (RUSTY!), it breaks my heart.

You are right flapjax. I regretted it as soon as I hit post comment. A terrible attempt at dark humor of which I am ashamed.

Nothing instills the fear of death quite like the idea that after you die, some stranger might go about photoshopping you out of photographs.
